My son played around with the menu button and now we have a big black rectangle in the middle and don't know how to get rid of it.

Simple solution that black box is the closed caption, you can find in menu, or on remote. Switch closed caption off.

Black box when tv is on and going through channels

This worked on my tv...give it a try:

go into your menu and find closed caption, someone has accidently set the closed caption mode to text, when the on screen display of channel or volume goes away the box appears. turn off the closed caption feature or switch it to something other than "text" mode, and your box will go away.

Try and turn off the closed captioning. I had the same problem and it turned out that the closed captioning was on t1 instead of OFF. Hope this helps!!!!

Big black box across the screen towards the bottom.

In some TV's closed captioning can cause this problem. turn off CC and see if that helps.

Zenith TV has a big black box in the middle of the screen.

After reading other postings, we figured out that it was the caption box, went to menu and turned it off.
Thanks for the great site, we wouldn't have figured it out without it !

unplug the set for a while , but this problem will return because of a malfunction in the EPROM CHIP , this controls the menu and a few other functions
