Not connecting to Internet

Dell 4600, integerated LAN connection. I tried a new cable nothing changed. I connected a different computer to the Hughes Sat modem and the LAN light on the modem light up and I connected to the Internet OK. I used the old and new cables with the second computer and both worked OK.

With the Dell, the LAN light on the modem did not come on.

What or how can i replace/by-pass the integerated LAN on the dell?

It is really rare, but it happens that the NIC (Network Interface Card) dies. Fortunately that is not a big deal, since you can buy one very cheap at your local computer store. or here.
(Don't let them sell you a Gigabit Ethernet card, that would be overkill. A 10/100 Mbps will just do fine!)

First - if you don't have one - download a manual here.
Look at page 55 onward how to open your computer and how to add a card to the PCI slot.

This is not complicated at all, even if you have never done this.
Just make sure that you unplugged the power cord before you start.
Try not to touch anything on the motherboard or the golden contacts on the card. (Hold it on the plastic side.) Make sure it is sitting tight in the slot - push it gently down.

If you run into any trouble, just come back here and I am happy to guide you through the process.

The Nic on the main board sounds like it went bad. You can purchase a pci nic card at best buy or so install that and it should be good to go.

Dell Vostro 200 will not connect to internet, what can I do?

check that the lan connection isn't disabled.
go into control panel>network connections.
I would disable it and then re-enable it, that sometimes works. if there is no lan connection showing then you need to download it onto a usb stick from the dell website and install it on the vostro. Product Support Dell US

Trying to setup netgear n750 Dual band router on my dimension 4600. My ISP is Big Dog. I've tried numerous cable configurations between the PC and router and can't get the PC to detect the router....

to set a wireless router you have to connect it first to the internet using the internet slot (sometimes named (wlan)and also connect the computer (for now ) in the first port on the router ..and in the Lan card on the computer ..using either a Lan/usb cable if the router has the ports on usb ..or a Lan /Lan cable (RJ45 plug)..
After all are powered and on ..you have to type in the browser (IExporer for ex) ..the address of the router..so that you will get to the log in page for the settings needed in the router ..(set the connection to the main internet ..and also settings for IP range to be assigned for the 4 ports..and to set the wireless parameters ..
To get to this page you have to see the router's IP ..(written on the sticker on the back ) ..and type on the browser like it follows:
ex.http://192.168.1.1 and hit enter.or type any of these ones
• http://www.routerlogin.net
and will have the same effect
a window with a log in tab will appear ..and you will have to complete the spaces for admin with the word admin and for password with the word password ..
these being the default set from factory and can be changed in the settings if you want to ..
If you have a broadband modem based connection ..you will need to change the router's default IP with a much simpler one for not to get into conflict with the modem ..so my advice is to set one with 2 digits ..like 10.10.10.1 or so ..It will be easy to remember and sure not to get in conflict ..cause the router also will assign the ip -es for the computers in this range ..(sometimes the modems have similar factory IP and will be in conflict cause the modem will became the default gateway for the router..when you set it ...
I will link the official manual in case you do not have it ..and there is even explained the wizard setting ..and the manual opne ..The idea is that the wizard setting will not be complete and will only set the router for a wireless connection or for to connect to one port ..It best to do it manually and complete.
Here is the manual
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNDR4000_SM_03NOV2010.pdf
you will need a pdf reader to open it ..such as Adobe reader ..
Good luck ..!

Check the cable by trying another one if you have not already done so. Before you buy a new ethernet card try downloading the driver for the ethernet card you now have and see if that solves the problem. Go to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600 If not then any Ethernet 10/100 PCI card should work fine in your Dell.

Initially check whether the ip address is assigned in the computer in which internet is not browsing using the command ipconfig/all for windows and ifconfig for linux. If ip is present try to ping the default gateway ip address,if ping is success there is no issue in the cable you used and also with ip address. If ip is not assigned assign ip by manually or by using dhcp of router.Enable and disable the lan card in the router so that sometimes the problem get resolved. After ip is assigned and ping with router is ok .Ensure dns servers are correct else give google public dns server 8.8.8.8.Then try to ping www.google.com in command prompt if ping is success then you can browse.

You are a bit confused with the various components required for Internet connections.
If you have a dial-up connection with an Internet Service Provider, all you do is connect your computer's modem port to the phone line and dial the phone number of your Internet Service provider.
If you are connected to the Internet Servise Provider by ADSL and have a combined ADSL router and modem then you connect the phone line to this router/modem. If the ADSL modem is separate component then the phone line is connected to the ADSL modem and this modem is connected to the router with a LAN cable and the computer is connected to the router with another LAN cable. If the route is wireless and the computer has a wireless card then you don't need a LAN cable between the router and the computer.
If you are connected to the Internet by ADSL, to secure your Internet connection and configure your computer so it can connect to the Internet, please follow my instruction - click on this link :-

Computer connection to broadband DIMMENSION 4600 5 YEAR OLD

You need to have a connection to an internet service provider to connect to the internet. Normally they will provide you with an IP address to configure your modem. I would contact them for these details.
If you have that info in hand, run the network setup wizard from the control panel.
For XP, please see this link
For Vista, please see this link
If you think there is some hardware fault, you can check this by looking in the Device Manager. A disabled adapter will appear with a red X across it.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post....thanks!
