Question about Security Labs Time Lapse Recorder

1 Answer

Trouble viewing recorded time-lapse recorder tape.

Hi guys, need help with a TLC 2100 Time-lapse recorder with a SMV116 Robot multiplexer.
This system belongs to a small business in the rural area where I live.
The first problem is, when we watch the recorded tape in the time-lapse recorder it switches from screen to screen so fast that we can't see anything.
It is a 16 channel simplex multiplexer and they are using 9 cameras. We are using a T120 tape. When we are recording we have the time set to 120. When we review the tape we set the speed down to 02. The owner tells me that these are the same settings that they have been using for years.
If I change the speed to 48 when we are reveiwing the tape, which slows the channel switching down, it will displays each camera screen but seems to be picking up some type of noise or something, There are scrambled lines at the top of the screen. The owner says this is not normal.
My second problem is, we are not able to stay on one screen to watch for any period of time. It just keeps switching from camera to camera.
From my understanding, over the past few weeks, a few of the guys that work there have changed the settings and moved some of the cables around to try to fix this problem. So I am not sure if the settings or cables are where they should be.
This business is thinking about up dating with a new DVR to put in a concealed location but would like to get this recorder working to use it as a decoy or dummy.
Does anyone have any idea what this problem might be.

Sounds like the heads on your TLC 2100 Time-lapse recorder are in their last legs. This is normal for those units. The reason you are having those scramble lines towards the top of the screen is because you are not playing at normal play speed.
The problem with the switching between cameras is that the "dwell time" settings is set to high. Most dvr's you can just disable that.

Hello I have a 9 channel multiplexer for my home security system, and Iam wondering if there is a way to replay my tapes through the multiplexer and view it full screen, even though it is taped on a split...

If you have the cameras being recorded by a vcr (tape) the answer is no. For you to have the ability to view full screen it must be recorded on a hard drive where all cameras can be recorded separately. This is not possible with a tape machine.

When I press record the light comes on and appears to be working, when I stop and rewind to re-play to make sure it is recording there is no picture or sound

it sounds as if you need the video and sound heads along with the tape travel path cleaning properly ie:remove the top cover and clean manualy PS:this should only be done if you have experiance as proper lint free clothes and cleaning fluid has to be used or you completely ruin the heads and these are expensive.
but you can buy a head cleaning tape and there are two types wet or dry i suggest through being in the trade for over 50yrs that yow use the wet one follow the insttructions on th may have to do it 2 or 3 times if ithaevey soiled PS the heads get soilddue to particles of tape being left each time you use the machine. hope this helps .tv ****

Viewing my videos

i have good and bad news for you guys. the bad news is that you'll never beable to see those videos in the normal time frame again. but the good news is that there's nothing wrong with your camera. try turning the sd1100 on again in video mode. then press on the function/set button. now just set the capture mode back to standard. you've had it in time lapse. if this doesnt help, then iono.... lol good luck!

The tape drive mechanism is defective. Most likely a jam in the roller track. It will cost more to repair than the unit is worth. 99% of all Time Lapse VCR's have been switched out with digital recorders. You can get a basic DVR for about 1000.

The video machine bleeps continually and shows a message E-3

I think the E3 error code indicates an error with the tape drive mechanism. If it ate a tape, this would indeed be the problem. Time Lapse VCR's are not very popular anymore, everything has gone to digital. It would most likely cost you more to fix that VCR than to switch out to a digital recorder.

Other advantages are -

No tape to change
Very good recorded image quality compared to VCR
Most digital units have capability for remote viewing over the internet
You can set the unit to "alert" you if there is movement in the garden
