Question about Audio Players & Recorders

6 Answers

I have a Yamaha S90 mini stereo system. The tuner, CTX S90, has some problems. The rest of the system is fine and I'd like to just fix or replace the tuner.

The display light is out.  Going blind, the receiver can only find a few channels, close together on the bandwidth.

  • rhsquires Jan 15, 2009

No, trust me, it's not the antenna.  There's no display.  The tuner can only move between two or three stations, very close together in bandwidth.  It would be helpful to know if there's a replacement available or if parts are available for the CTX S90.

OK, I tried giving it a whack, and nothing happened. Does anyone know where replacement parts, or better yet a replacement unit for the Yamaha CTX S90 might be found? That's the tuner in a four piece mini (11"x12") component system from about 10 years ago.

The unit is not for sale anymore, either you call Yamaha to find out which model has same connectors and dimension, or you buy second hand, like the one below:

Welcome to Fixya! These Units are out of Production at this Point. The Main Circuit Board has a Bad Malfuntion and it would Probably cost as Much to Repair as a New Unit. I would think about the New Unit Before I would Repair this one. Look at Crutchfield.com for their line of Shelf Systems.

    Hi again
With some tuners you have to a get booster antenna to drag in a good signal for the tuner, the reason for this could be a number of things, interference or very weak signal for example, try connect a standard TV coaxial cable to the FM socket on the tuner and see if it picks up any more channels as i think that the tuner is fine and its a matter of weak signals in your area

    Good luck and kind regards

    Hi there again
It could well be a dry solder joint in this case

Give it a good smack with your hand or fist to see if a loose connection or cold solder joint will reactivate.

If not, probably a bad connection or broken board in the display driver has occured.

If you take the cover off and give it a good and careful visual you MAY
find something, but mostly these things are hard to find. Most often
it is a power supply failure or broken circuit foils that feed the
    driver and lumenescant panels.

I doubt if a bulb is used in this set, but you will learn very quickly once the cover is off and you do the visual examination.

    Good Luck

Need to know if a looped ground would make it where the tuner on my car stereo works fine but the cd player only uses the subs and no other speakers work ? On a 1995 BMW 325i

It sounds to me like you are using more than one amplifier and are using the blue wire (power antenna remote turn on) to turn the amp for the rest of your speakers. The blue wire turns off when leaving tuner mode, thus turning off the amp(s).

How do i make this woofer work with my polroid tv

OK, it looks from what I can tell you need a 1/4" stereo plug for the input to your speaker system. The output from the TV is either RCA jacks or maybe a 1/8" sub mini stereo jack. You can likely go to Radio Shack or an audio store and purchase a cable that has the 1/4" stereo plug on one end and a 1/8" sub mini stereo plug on the other. That cable would mute the TV internal speaker or if you do not want to mute the TV speakers you can get a cable with the 1/4" stereo plug on one end and the L and R audio, RCA (phono) plugs on the other. That would give you both. RCA plug and 1/4" plugs are pretty easy to install if can not find the correct cables. Good Luck. The Yamaha unit looks to be self powered so impedance matching or load on the TV audio amps should not be a problem.

Why does my sony gx450 cuts out when the speakers come on?

You probably have bad solder connections on the printed circuit board, check the speaker wires on the back for possible shorts. If the tuner is additional problem it is much more difficult to repair and would require a service manual with the proper test equipment.

Intermintent stereo in 97 caravan

sound like the tuner it's self is going bad.  Have you checked the antenna connections?  Try holding on to the antenna when the radio is fading out.  Sadly the radio is part of the stereo and not a separate module.  You need a new stereo, get one with HD radio...you'll love it.

I have the same receiver with the same problem. I fixed it by using a cleaning spray on the inside of the input switch. Deoxit 5 is the cleaner and it took care of the problem.

How to connect YAMAHA DVR-S120 to computer

As long u`ve got audio out on ur Vaio (usually headphone mini jack on laptop`s) use stereo mini jack to RCA (both male plugs) extension cable. U may use video or vcr inputs on Yamaha. Be careful, when adjusting volume on ur Vaio - start from mid range & compare with other sources - DVD, TUNER etc. I`m not sure, but ur model got an optical SPDI/F audio output. In this case use toslink cable. Cheers
