VLC Media Player is a free dvd decoder software that is just about as good as any commercial dvd decoding software. I run it and do not even install any other type. Just google the name and you will find the link to download it.
I had the same issue with a liteon DVD drive I had. It worked fine and then one day it couldn't write to a DVD if I paid it to. I troubleshooted it for a few days, installed all the latest updates and patches and still nothing. From what I could tell, it baiscally died. So fortunately Liteons are relatively cheap so I just went out and got another LiteOn and it worked just fine. I would consider purchasing a new Drive.
