After the most recent HP update, my ATI 4850 now has registry issues. It no longer recognizes my second monitor and the PC only allows for basic video settings. Here is what appears when I run a check...

Yoy can find the sections in the registry with regedit from the 'run' command. That takes experienced users to deal with. Alternatively, use the device manager in 'System' and delete the display device. On re-booting it will go through the found hardware wizard and re-load the drivers.

Installed new video card, system reboots

your current graphics card settings is not set to the correct level to match your system, you can download ATI Catalyst software from this link:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

after installing, you may have to restart your computer. when you restart, right click on the desktop and select (ATI catalyst), there you can adjust your graphic card features or you can use the recommended settings the software have adjusted for your graphic card by clicking on restore settings/defaults.

you should not encounter problems once you have installed the ATI software.

Nvidia geforce 8400 GS pci code 12 error not enough free resources to use (no conflicts)

Error code 12 is one of those errors I hope you won't ever receive, because fixing the problem can be rather difficult. There are two different things that can trigger this error. The most common problem is a resource conflict. Essentially, this means that two hardware devices have been assigned overlapping resources.

A corrupt Multiprocessor System (MPS) table can also cause error code 12. If the MPS table is corrupt, it can cause the BIOS to allocate insufficient resources to hardware devices. I have had a really tough time locating information regarding a solution to this problem. From what I have been able to tell, though, it appears that an MPS table can become corrupt as a result of a damaged hardware abstraction layer (HAL). If that is the case, then reinstalling Windows may fix the problem.

In plain English :D either you have 2 pieces of hardware trying to use the same resources (unlikely), or you have software that is trying to run the same driver twice. I believe that about the only way you are going to get rid of that message is with a clean install. Even then I wouldn't guarantee it.

Garbled display with Geforce 7600GS

From experince I would still say this is a heat issue, I just went though this with my HD4870 ATI card. I was using an after market cooler wich was insuficent for cooling. All the symptoms point to a heat issue. Also since the card is 2 years old, its a good chance the VRM's have fried and any heat causes the card to basicaly shutdown in a manner of speaking. you could try getting the Accelero S1 cooler that would replace the fan on the card, then attach 2X120mm fans. Only problem is you can buy a newer better card. for example the 8600 GT is about 80-90$

Screen goes blank after installing card

You're video settings will be within Advanced Settings. You're manual does not show any bios menu's. I'm sure the heading Advanced will be listed at the top of one of you're menu's. You may not be able to disabe you're onboard display but you will be able to change display order & that is what you want to do. If you're system still just sits there. Power off the PC & unplug the power cord. Remove the cmos/bios battery, (Use a flat tip screw driver to help you to pop it out). Wait about 15 seconds & pop it back in. Plug the power cord back in & power up you're system. Enter the bios & try again. Change the order of the video. Save & exit. Windows should load. Rather than installing you're current CD video software, go online & download the most current display software. Other software to install DirectX 9.0c found at microsoft.

ATI 9600 xt problems

Hi, Im guessing that your motherboard has an intergrated video card & you installed the 9600 card into the opened AGP slot on the board. If you would have listed the model number of your motherboard I would't have to guess. What you need to do is enter your bios & make a change so your bios loads the AGP slot & not the intergrated video card. How to get into your bios? As soon as you turn on the Pc press the Delete key every two seconds. If your system fails to load the bios than you will need to try some of the others F keys. Let the PC finish loading. Re-start the PC. As it starts up try the F1 key every two seconds. Continue in this manner using these other F keys untill your system boots into the bios. F2, F10 or F12. One will work for you. Once in the bios use your manual if you have one. You are looking for Video display. You want the bios to load the AGP slot first, this will disable the intergrated video automatically. Your Pc will now see your 9600 video card & you will be able to load it's software. If the 9600 uses ATI's software you should update the Radeon software by going to ATI/AMD & update your video software with the latest drivers. Click the link I have posted below to upgrade your Radeon 9600XT card. Good idea to save the link.
