My link sys ether fast cable /dsl router with 4 port switch, won't connect with my internet. I am not computer literate. The directions seemed easy enough, but I think that maybe I bought the wrong type of router for the laptop

fast cable /dsl router with 4 port switch will only allow yoou to sue "wired" connections to the Internet. If you have a laptop and want to go wireless, you need a wireless router.

If it is also a modem you must contact your isp and give them your mac address on the router( located on the bottom usually ). If it is DSL you must enter in the correct PPPOE information so the router can dial into your service.

I am trying to set up a switch between my PS3 and my PC. I have an external DSL modem. I purchased a 5 port switch(Rosewill RC405-x) but no luck. Can I use an ethernet splitter instead?

You did not explainhaow you connected all your equipment together.
Connect your PC and PS3 into the 5 port switch.
Connect your DSL modem into the 5 port switch, if there is a WAN/internet port on the 5 port switch then connect the DSL model into this port.
You may need to power off the 5 port switch wait a 1 min and power up the 5 port switch again so it can setup an IP address table for the connected ports.
If this still does not work the replace the 5 port switch with a normal 5 port hub.

HOW TO USE INTERNET IN MORE THAN ONE PC FROM LINKSYS WIRELESS G B

You have two ways on how you can get other computer online through this router. First, you can wired them (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the router. They are the ones labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Second is through wireless, but those computers that will connect through wireless must also have a wireless adapter to be able to pick up the signal that this router is broadcasting.

I'm having problems tring to connect to ATT HS DSL, flashing green light but can not connect to internet, what settings on DSL-2640B do I need???

If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work?
If that works then the modem is working.
Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router.
You can set up the router without the CD also.
It is very easy.

When I connect a DSL router to my switch, either the link goes down or the router hangs. I'm connecting via a cross-cable as the switch does not have an uplink port. Any ideas?

Maybe your cable is bad.
Have you tried a different cable.

I just read the specs and it seems like quite a modern switch.
I'd be surprised if the ports aren't auto sensing so either a straight or cross over cable should work.

You could try a factory reset on the switch.

Another idea is connect to your DSL modem direclty from you pc and from your browser open the modems config page There should be some kind of event log in there somewhere. See if anything gets logged when the link goes down. It might give you some idea where to look. Your modem manual should tell you how to find the event logs. I take it your DSL modem only has one ether net port?

Hope this helps

Since you did not include the type of internet provider I cannot give you more specific instructions. Although you can refer to the links below on how to set it up. If you require further assistance just reply to this and give me the model number of your ISP and the model of your router. Also answer this question " When you plug your computer to your modem do you get online automatically or do you need a username and password"

No internet connection on my laptops

Please understand as I get very basic to start but things very obvious to you I cannot see.

Generally when including a router in a home network starting from the cable (tv) or the phone socket (dsl) in the wall with a phone wire plugged in. The next box is generally provided by your internet service provider and is a modem/something that connects to the phone line or cable. Then sometimes when only one computer exists computers are directly connected to the modem with an ethernet cable (looks like a fat phone wire with oversize connectors) or a USB cable (small flat retangular ends).

When you want to add a router for multiple computers. The computer gets disconnected. If a USB cable was used it is often replaced with an ethernet cable and that cable connects to the WAN port (probably separate from a block of 4 lan ports) of the router you bought (tell me if you have two routers -- that is a different problem). If your service comes from a cable (tv) company your router may already be properly configured. If however you have DSL service from the phone company the chances your router is correctly configured are less. To finish with the cabling story -- your computer then hooks to one of probably 4 LAN ports all in a block. Now if you are lucky power on all devices and boot up your computer and see if you have internet access. If you do great if not please provide me the name of your internet service provider or a link to their help/support website and I will see what I can do to assist in completing the router setup. Until your wired computer gets access to the internet your girls wireless connections will not work either. Once we get the wired connection working we will address the wireless connections.
If necessary unplug the router and plug the computer back into the original cable until we get the router working.
