Amana washer - not agitating

We have an Amana washing machine that we purchased in 1998. When on regular wash, it fills and starts to agitate, but stops. It won't do ANYTHING else under the regular wash. I did turn it to rinse under the Delicate cycle and it drained, spun and finished. Any ideas on what to check first??Thanks Essentially the same thing has started happening with mine. For a while, we were able to use the start knob to turn the machine off & on a few times...but now it doesn't agitate at all on normal or permanent press cycles. The delicate cycle works fine. What's throwing me on the motor solution is that it does agitate on the Delicate cycle.

I have a VOM...what's the best method to diagnose?

Is there a way to verify before I purchase a new motor, since I won't be able to return it once I plug it in?

Well...$220 spent on a new motor late, and I still have the exact same problem.

I can't begin to express how angry I am at the moment.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue with mine. Can you hear the motor running during the agitation? If the motor is running, but the agitator isn't working, then that would point to something like the transmission, or some sort of obstruction that is preventing the agitator from working properly. If the motor isn't running, then try running through different cycles. If it operates properly on one cycle, but not others, then I would tend to think that it's in the controller. If not, then it's likely in the motor. I also have seen a post somewhere instructing to check the vacuum connection to the water level control, as well. NOt sure how that plays into the equation, but it's easy enough to do & doesn't cost anything to try. FYI: I just spent $10 for one of the "experts" here to tell me that the issue was "absolutely" in my motor. After spending $220 to replace a motor that I cannot return now since it's been installed, I find out that my original assessment is probably correct & my problem is in the controller. If it comes down to a toss-up between the two, go with the cheapest first (likely the controller). Hope this helps.

I just replaced the controller in the machine & it now works wonderfully.Additionally, I would recommend checking out RepairClinic.com for your parts needs. I've used them several times & have found them to be prompt and very reasonably priced.

Yep, you need to test motor and motor control unit first (or motor coupler).

then you check wiring harness and main board.

Also check lid switch and drum bearing.

If you give me exact model number I can be more detailed.

There is a motor for the agitation that eventually fails in all washing machines. Due to the fact that this is a 115v set up, you need to use a multimeter to diagnose. There is also a belt that runs from the motor but that rarely is the case.

That is a different setting inside the motor. Motor has an internal regulator that will not supply the necessary current for high speed agitation. If it works on delicate but nothing else it is a given.

No, there is not, I am sorry for the bad news.

Wont agitate on its own

IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE START CONTACT IN THE TIMER IS NOT MAKING A CONNECTION UNTIL YOU PULL OUT ON THE SHAFT OF THE TIMER. MOST TIMES IT NEEDS A NEW TIMER.

I need to remove the agitator from my washing machine.

On most Amana washers you pull on the agitator with brute force. It "snaps" on. It helps if you fill the washer with hot water and let it set for a few minutes... drain and then try pulling it out. When i last took apart my Amana it took me and a friend to pull the agitator off.

Washer won't agitate or spin

The transmission is dead!
It's not worth fixing!
If it's 10 years old or more, better off replacing it with a newer machine which will be much more efficient!
1998????????????
Not worth the money to fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
