Hi there, I am having a problem enabling my wireless modem on my Acer Aspire 5612WLMi laptop. The sliding button on the front does not appear to be working and anything else I have tried doesn't either. I am running Windows XP. Can you please help?

Re: Cannot enable wireless on my Acer Aspire 5612WLMi
First, does the modem show up in the device manager (without an exclamation mark or an "x". In other words, does the computer see the card and is it not reporting any problems. Second, do you see the wireless connection when you go into My Network Places and Network Connections? Third, does the wireless connection icon appear in the system tray?

Desktop PCs do not generally have wireless switches. These are usually only to be found on laptops, netbooks and some nettops.
It is unusual for mid-specification desktop PCs like yours to have a built-in wireless function.
So the answer is that there is no wireless switch.
You can make a desktop PC wireless enabled by adding either an internal PCI wireless card or plugging in an external USB Wireless Adapter (far simpler). With these devices and their drivers and software installed, you will see a wireless icon bottom right of screen. Right click on this icon > View Available Networks/Connect to a Network to find your router's signal > once you connect to your wireless router by entering the SSID (router name) and Network Key (encrypted access code), the PC will be able access the internet wirelessly.
Once it is wireless enabled. whenever you turn the PC on, you just wait for the wireless icon to indicate you are connected to the internet (usually a blue globe).
You probably never enabled the wireless card ..Go to network folder and start the wireless connection ..In there select to connect wireless and teh card will enable the wireless and will show available networks after .. Also check in the device manager to see if the wireless card is proper installed ..if it is not ..just download and install the drivers from support site ..or install them from the recovery partition or from the disk if you have one . to get into device manager .click right on computer icon ..select properties than device manager ..In there look for wifi card ..click right on it and select enable ..If it is in yellow it means it has no driver ..and try to click right on it and select update driver .. Also see that it may have a button for the wireless to be enabled on it ..Im not sure but it may be something similar to laptops..just a button needed to be pressed in order to enable the wireless card without any other intervention ..If the card is enabled it will appear in the tray from task bar (right area ) where all active programs appear ..Right click on it ...and select to show networks ..and select yours and connect ..
You don't need the modem. You plug the router into the PC and install your ISPs software (if any) and then open up a browser window and underneath the router on a sticker it will give you the address to put in and the username and password to access.
Set up should be easy but you can enable wireless from there (if it's not already on) and then the rest of your devices (provided they are wireless enabled) can use the router wirelessly one you enter the password on them.
Please make sure that in the bois your wireless connection is set to enabled, and the other thing you need to do is to make sure that you know where the toggle swich is on. otherwise check on your windows bar on the right hand side to see the network connections.
Check that for and than chat to me and I will talk you through the rest if need be.
Then mouse properties window will be open.
Click on device setting.
Your TouchPad will be listed under Devices, be sure that its Enabled/Yes, if its not enabled click on Enable button bellow to the device list.
Note: If your TouchPad is not listed in Devices list, then you have to install driver for the touch pad. For driver please search Acer website.
