Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

No water from hot water faucet

I have a Paloma tankless water heater PH-28RIFSN (Natural Gas) located in the basement. Today it is -31 degrees and when I turned on the hot water faucet, there was no water, not a trickle. The unit does not read any errors, all valves are open. There is good cold water pressure. All necessary pipes are insulated, the outside vent is clear and the gas intake valve has been increased in size to accommodate usage. We are on a well and am concerned that the pipes are freezing, therefore can this be a cause for no water from the hot water faucet. Would the water in the tank be from previous use or is it continuous flow from the well when the tap is turned on, therefore allowing only cold water use? I am in need of immediate help here, I do not need any burst pipes today! Thank you.

One other note. If you do not get any water out of that relief valve, then it could be that the vent for the heater froze the water in the heater. Is the heater located inside of the house?

That heater will have a relief valve on it. Have you tried to to manually open it and see if it discharges water? If it does, you probably have a frozen water line. Im from ND and I understand -30+ below weather. One note on insulation. Always think of it as keeping the temp in, not keeping cold or warm weather temps out.

I don't know where the white pipe is supposed to go.. rusty water is dripping from it. We have to keep refilling water all the time.. I can't see a leak anywhere..We've used a lot of gas in just a few weeks, woke up today with an empty gas tank.. Any ideas to where the white pipe goes? And is the fact that we've been refilling water a lot the reason that we've used so much gas do you think? Would be grateful for a quick reply :)
    kind regards Jill

Thanks for your question, sounds to me like you have a frozen line, I used to live in Northern, MN on a well, and had alot of time un-thawing water lines, yes it is continuous flow, sorry for having to say this but you need to immediately start tracing your hot water lines and see if you have any leaks, bulges, or ice forming on the line, tap the line with a screwdriver to hear the difference in sound when you find the frozen section, here is the tricky part, if its (pecks line, plastic) then you need to call a plumber, if copper, you can use a torch to un thaw the line, but use extream caution when doing this as many people has accidentally started fires, my best advise is to call a plumber, hope that helped, please get back to us and let us know what you find, thanks again, mr.grzz

What can cause Hot/Cold spikes on an RTG74-XN

Crossover, low hot water flow, low water pressure, sediment in water lines or heater, heat exchanger needs to be de-limed, water filter needs to be cleaned, water heater temperature set too high, incoming water temperature too high or too low depending on model, MUD or PUD districts with pressure spikes, dirty faucet aerators, loose wires, bad sensor, faulty PD-board, bad venting, dirty burner and combustion parts, etc.

Error 13 paloma tankless hot water system. no hot water

Before calling service technician, open following links for error codes, Rheem/Paloma chat and tech support, and possible manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html
http://www.fixya.com/support/t3444443-paloma_tank_less_water_heater_flashes

Error codes are considered start-point for troubleshooting.
Tankless manuals recommend yearly service including burner cleaning, gas pressure and plumbing check, de-liming etc to prevent problems and so technician is familiar with that specific unit.
