Monitor Won't Turn Off

Originally when I turned my computer off, the monitor went black and I could then turn it off. Now when I shut down my computer, the screen goes white and I can no longer turn it off. I have to actually pull the power plug to get it to turn off. What gives?

I fixed it! The 'white screen of death' is fixable! It's the power supply board.

The Westinghouse LCM 22w2 has bad capacitors on the yellow power supplyboard. This is a common problem plaguing motherboards and LCDflatpanels that use capacitors from Taiwan. If you know how to solder,or know somebody that can, it's actually a pretty easy fix. Take outthe yellow circuit board on the inside, write down the specificationsfor each of the capacitors (the cylindrical things) go to theelectronics supply store and get the replacement capacitors. You can goover the voltage specification (not under), but keep the capacitancevalue matching. Replace one at a time. Go to www.badcaps.net foradvice, tutorials and training on doing this. *You really shouldreplace all the capacitors*, but the very large one next to the powerplug I did leave on the board because I couldn't find a match. To mydelight, the white screen of death went away and it was working as new!

I saved a ton of money fixing this, it's definitely worth learning how to solder to do this.

HOW DO I HOOK UP AS A COMPUTER MONITOR EMERSON LC320EM1F

The Emerson LC320EM1F has an HDMI connector (HDMI 1) that can be connected to a computer with an HDMI out or a DVI out. With a DVI connection, you will need a ferrite core on the HDMI cable. You can use a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to HDMI adapter with the appropriate cable. You will also need a 3.5 mm to RCA (M/M) audio cable (or the adapters and cables) if you want to use the TV speakers. If you have only a VGA output on the computer, you will need an analog to digital converter (like this: http://www.startech.com/AV/Converters/Video/VGA-HD-with-Audio-to-HDMI-Format-Converter~VGAHD2HDMI ).

You can find the manual for this TV including the connections here: http://www.emersonaudiovideo.com/support/download.php . Enter your model number and then the list of manuals will appear. The connection to computer diagrams is on page 13.

Once you have your cables (you will get the best prices from an online shop), turn off both the computer and the TV. Connect the cables then turn on the TV and set it the HDMI 1 input. (Use the Source button on the remote. You can also press CH Up repeatedly.) Then turn on the computer. If your computer has a recent version of Windows, it should see the TV automatically if the port is active on the computer. For a laptop, you will need to change the display settings to use the TV monitor. Right click on the desktop (anywhere there are no icons or programs), find the Display properties option. Set the monitor option to use the second screen (extended or monitor only). Click Apply and confirm the setting on the pop-up. (These are Win7 directions; other OS versions will be similar.) For a desktop, you may need to go to the Screen Resolution option after right-clicking. (This is a shortcut to the Control Panel Display settings window. Thus you can also click Start > Control Panel > Display to get to the right area.)

Some machines may need the port enabled in the BIOS first. This applies more often to older laptops or those with a power-saving option that turned off unused ports. You will need to enable the port with a different monitor active before connecting to the TV. Accessing the BIOS varies but usually involves pressing Esc, F1, F2 or F10 repeatedly after you turn on the computer. I often miss the timing; just turn off the computer and try again if the OS loads or the log-in screen appears.

If you get an unknown mode message on the TV, the previous monitor may have used a refresh rate and resolution that the TV can't understand or the TV was turned on after the computer was turned on. If it's the second case, press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice or turn off the computer (you will see a warning that Windows was improperly shut down). Then turn on the computer. If you have the first issue, go to the previous monitor and use the Screen Resolution directions above. Set the refresh rate to 60 Hz. Set the resolution to 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 768 or 1380 x 768. (The options will be limited to those that are compatible with this monitor.)

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(Note only HDMI 1 supports a computer signal; the other ports will not understand the computer's video output.)

Flatron w1934s display problems; symptoms are black screen after 2 sec's of power up. i have tried wiggling the monitor cable/nothing, did notice if i unplugged the monitor cable you can see the screen...

hi good day
before you come up that the main board was the problem lets verify first to narrow down where the problem came from. now as you said you have been tried to put a backlight just to know if their is a problem with the backlight but still you have black screen so which mean the inverter ballast is possibly good as will as the backlight. ok here is on how will you trace the main cause you need to turn on the tv unit then check if their is a INV_ON voltage around 3.3V coming from processor going to inverter ballast, now if do not have voltage turn off the unit then disconnect the connector going to the ballast board and turn on the unit check again the INV_ON if still no voltage come out you have bad processor from the main board. now if the case is the INV_ON voltage is present their is a shorted component at the ballast board that is why the screen is going black after you turn on. if their is an error detected the main board will cut off. hope this will help you thanks for consulting through fixya god bless.

How do I see VGA in put on screen

First, is the TV the only connected monitor? Second was the TV on and set to VGA (press the Input button and then up/down arrows) before the computer was turned on.

If you are seeing an invalid mode message and the TV is the only monitor attached, you need to shut down the computer and leave the TV on the VGA input. (Turn off the computer or press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice.) If this doesn't work, you may need to use another monitor and adjust the resolution output for the computer's video and then connect to the TV.

If you have another monitor, you may need to make sure that the VGA port is enabled. (Some laptops will have this disabled in the BIOS. Depending on the brand of computer, you can access the BIOS by pressing Esc, F1, F2 or F10 repeatedly just as you turn on the computer.) Next you may need to adjust the active display. In Windows 7, right click on the desktop where there are no program icons or windows. Then select Graphic Properties. Set the computer for monitor 1 or 2, extended display or both (at least on my HP laptop). Click Apply and then confirm your . (alternatively: Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display) For my desktop, this is set under Screen Resolution in the same manner.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(at least on all of my computers, if the TV is on first, Windows 7 will autoset to the best resolution that the graphics and monitor can handle.)

Gateway monitor fpd2185w goes to sleep and then shuts off

I suggest to mess around with the monitor buttons and see if you can disable it from sleeping from there. If not then try enabling it to sleep on your computer settings. A good restart after any changes is always helpful.

While trying to change channels, my t.v. displayed ''no signal'' and then shut itself off. Now, when I turn it on, it says no signal and turns itself off after a few seconds.

Turn the television on and as soon as the screen turns on repeatily press the input button or change the input to whatever input you are using from a source device. As long as you change it to anything other than RGB.

Your television is essentially a big computer monitor with multiple inputs and a tuner. When using your computer and shutting it down the monitor will go in a power save mode. You don't need to shut off your monitor due to this power saving mode. When you power up your computer your monitor automatically turn on.

With the VIZIO and the RGB (computer) input the television will act just like a computer monitor. When you have a computer connected it will power down automatically when you shut off your computer. When you turn your computer on the VIZIO will automatically come out of standby mode. This is through RGB only.

This is normal operation for the VIZIO but can see confusing when nothing is connected to the RGB input. If you change your television input to RGB it will sense no signal on the input and will go into standby mode after about 5 - 10 seconds. If you were to send a signal to the television through RGB it would automatically kick on.
