I have problem with my new laptop MSI CR420. The DVD/CD RW ROM drive can't read from CD, it's just can read from DVD. So can you help me to solve this problem....

I am going to provide troubleshooting steps to try fixing this problem, since the disc drive can still read DVD disc its no longer a hardware issue, so im thingking this might be a software issue and the steps below might help you fixing this.

- click start > run and type "regedit" w/o qoutes
- once you access the REGISTRY EDITOR kindly open therse folder (each folder contains another folder) make sure to follow the below steps carefully.
- go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
- insed the "class" folder look for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} it is the CD/DVD rom drive.
- at the right part of the registry delete "upper" and "lower" filters name
- once done close the registry.
Go to device manager
- click start > run > type "devmgmt.msc"
- click the + sign beside CD/DVD drives
- right click and select properties
- go drivers tab
- and then select the button uninstall the driver
- RESTART THE COMPUTER
After restart all should be fine now.

I have a compaq presario v6000 and my cd/dvd drive does not show or read cds, but it does spin when i put a cd in to it, also it does not show in device manager

your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this dvd-drive then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
click start control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you will see options to update driver, roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall
make sure that the cd-dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

hope this helps

You can try to delete upper and lower filters for your system. go to start>run>type in regedit click ok> start looking for this parth HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318},when click on the folder look on the right column and look for upper/lower filters and delete it. restart system. Try updating the firmware of the optical drive depending on the model.
caution:be careful with deleting registry for your system this might affect your operating system functionality.

Can not read dvd movies

When you say DVD movies, are you only talking about copied DVDs? Or any DVD that isn't one that was purchased as a movie? It is probably that the drive doesn't support the blank DVDs being used, but I would think that it would work with a true movie DVD. Give that a try, also, does it work with CD-ROMs?

On my computer it looks like my DVD drive is working but when I put in a disc I can not get it to run and even if there is a disc in the drive in Windows Explorer it says put a disk in the drive.

In other words it is not reading the disc inserted in it.
You can get a download from the internet for a DVD driver software. At the Search engine blank, type
(DVD driver software download) and at the site, choose the appropriate driver software and download it your PC. After you get the download, go back to your PC menu, and click open your downloaded driver, and get it installed. Once installed you will
now see that it is already running.

DVD drive won't recognize discs

Does your cd drive show up in my computer?
for a game disc, you dont need any codecs at all to run it. those are for recognizing certain formats of video and audio usually found in downloaded musics and movies. let me know.

Cannor Read DVDs

I have a similar issue to you, except that my dvd drive will only recognize a disc if I have booted up into windows with it in the tray...once in windows it will still think it has the first disc in no matter what disc i insert. If i boot up with no disc then it will never read it unless I follow the steps below.

A solution I found by pure frustration and trying all sorts of things is to eject the DVD tray and leave it opened, then right click on the dvd drive in 'my computer' and select the 'hardware' tab...then select the drive and click 'properties'.
A new window should open. Select 'volumes' and click 'populate'. Now close the window and insert the disc you wish to read, close the tray and repeat this process. Windows should now recognize the disc you inserted

Alot of trouble I know, but it works for me. Hope this helps.

Dvd-rom trouble

Hi, first of all, I'd check if you have the problem with CD/DVDs burned (written on a CD/DVD writer) or you have it also with original CD/DVDs, which would be weird. Depending on your finding to the above point I'd do one thing or another, but to me does not look like a driver problem. I'd check with Toshiba support if there's a new firmware for your drive, this does improve the media the device can read and correct problems like the one you mention. To know the fimware version you're using, open device manager and go find your drive, right click on it and choose details tab. Normally the firmware revision is the number at the end of the instance. Good luck mate !
