Question about Gateway MT6840 Notebook

Gateway MT6840 Laptop will not power up

The laptop is 18 months old, and has been working fine. The other day it was plugged in and my wife opened it up. The screen said that the last time it was turned off it was not done right. She pressed the button for start in safe mode, and everything shut down. The lights on the front do not turn on. We live overseas working for the Navy and there is no support over here.

I already tried that. I am trying to verify that the power supply is still good. I opened the back and didn't see any burn marks or breaks in the board. As far as I can tell the power jack is not loose either.

pretty close to the same issue here. Worked one day then the next tried to boot it and it beeped a couple of times. Does not try to spin the hard drive or fans. Blinks a single light on the touch pad 3 or 4 times then nothing. Just sits there.

SOURCE: Gateway MT6840 Laptop will not power up

Hi,

have you already tried to power up your laptop without the battery, only with the powersupply docked in?
If this works, you´ll have to replace the battery or use the laptop without a battery.
If this doesn´t work, just take the full battery from the other laptop try to power up the laptop without the power supply docked in.
If this works, your latop motherboard is broken and till it is replaced, you have only the chance to work with a battery and reload it with another latop.

Is there a docking station for my mt6840 gateway computer?

I do not believe there is a docking station for that model. But... Try pulling out the battery. Then plug in the power supply and see if you can get it to power on. If so wiggle the plug and see if it shuts off. If either if those are true, en you most likely need your DC Jack replaced. You would want to take it to a laptop repair shop. It is usually $20 for the part and around 1.5 - 2 hours labor for the repair. Requires pulling out the motherboard and desoldering the old jack. And soldering in a new one. No fun

Gateway M-6862 laptop will not turn on; battery light flashing re

Seems to be a problem of not enough power.

First check the voltage output of the charger(adapter) and match it with its specs.

Also try to reset the hardware using the following steps:

1 Disconnect battery and the charger
2 Let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
3 Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
4 Reconnect battery and charger and try to start by pressing the power button.

Power port for gateway MT6840

First easy check is to stick a toothpick into the jack to see if the middle pin is loose. If it's not loose, try another power adapter to check just incase. If you dont have one ask around to borrow a universal one. Dont jiggle and wiggle the plug with the power plugged in if it is loose because i've seen shorts happen.

usually plugs are mounted onto the mainboard. To get to the main board, you'd have to take apart everything because everything attatches to the main board. The case, keyboard, heatsinks, speakers, and so on must come off before you'll be able to see the power jack. With parts and labor, it comes close to a new laptop.

Laptop not charging even when plugged in- battery or power supply

Sounds like you have a bad power jack. Broken solder connection on circuit board. Is it loose when you plug it in the back of the laptop?
If so that is what it is, seek professional repair as it is not a repair for the novice!
