Unlock

Unlock an iPod Model A1199
Although the second generation iPod Nano (also known as 2G) uses a four-digit pass code that prevents unauthorized access to your iPod by locking the screen, you can also unlock the device by plugging it into your computer's USB 2.0 port.
When the 2G iPod Nano is connected to the computer it is synchronized, and automatically unlocks the screen according to the official Apple site.
In order to successfully unlock the Nano it must be plugged into the primary computer used for synchronizing content.

Click "Start," "All Programs" and "iTunes" on your PC's desktop, or click "iTunes" on the Macintosh's desktop dock.
Plug the iPod Nano's cable into the docking port on the iPod Nano.
Plug the other end into the USB port on the computer to open iTunes.
Click "Controls" at the top of the iTunes' menu, and select "Eject iPod."
The iPod Nano's screen will be unlocked once it is ejected from your computer.

Unlock an iPod Nano Code
With the latest iPod Nano model, you can set a four-digit code and lock all intruders from accessing your iPod.
In order to use the device's functions again, you need to enter the correct code.
However, if you happen to lose or forget the code, you will need to find another way to unlock your iPod Nano.

Plug the iPod USB cable into the bottom of your iPod Nano.
Plug the other end of the USB cable into a free USB port on your Mac or PC computer.
Open the iTunes program by using the Dock on a Mac or the Start menu on a PC.
Select your iPod Nano from the "Devices" list in the main iTunes window.
Click on the "Sync" button to make a connection between your computer and your iPod Nano.
Click on the "Eject" symbol once the syncing process is complete.
Remove your iPod Nano from the USB cable.
The iPod's lock code will now be reset and you will be able to access all features again.
Navigate to the "Screen Lock" option in the iPod menu to lock your iPod's screen again.
Since your iPod's lock code was just reset, you will be prompted to select a new four-digit code.

The problem is, i want to put music from my laptop onto my apple ipod 4GB a1051, how do i do that please?

The following information has come directly from the apple support web site.

Adding Content Automatically or Manually
There are two ways to add content to iPod nano: ? Automatic syncing: When you connect iPod nano to your computer, iPod nano is automatically updated to match the items in your iTunes library. You can sync all your songs, playlists, videos, and podcasts, or, if your entire iTunes library doesn’t fit on iPod nano, you can sync only selected items. You can sync iPod nano automatically with only one computer at a time. ? Manually managing iPod nano: When you connect iPod nano, you can drag items individually to iPod nano and delete them individually from iPod nano. You can add songs from more than one computer without erasing songs from iPod nano. When you manage music yourself, you must always eject iPod nano from iTunes before you disconnect it.

The following URL will bring you to the iPod Nano manual. For more information on setting up you iPod see chapter 2: Setting up iPod Nano

I hope that information above has helped is some way.
If possible please rate this solution.

My son recieved an ipod nano 4 gig for xmas. it had some info written in japanese on it. i formatted the ipod and tried to sync it with my laptop to fill it with songs. the ipod attempted to auto sync and...

when you plug the ipod into the computer, itunes should automatically open. Right click on the image of your ipod and select sync music, a page should come up with options to auto sync or manually sync with a playlist of your choice. Choose which playlist you want to sync the ipod with and then select sync. If you are having trouble with itunes recognising the ipod then try resetting it then plugging it back into the computer. You can reset the ipod by
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step. (from apple.com)
