Try the following:-

First Make sure your PC has access to the internet

Click "Start" --> "Control Panel"
Double click on "System" --> "Hardware" --> "Device Manager"
Search for your "Sound Card" under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers"
If there is a problem you will see an exclamation mark over the top of the symbol
Right Click and Select "Update Driver"
If you have the correct sound driver disk or driver disk that came with the pc
insert this now and select "no not this time"
then "install driver automatically"
Alternatively
Select "Yes this time only" to allow windows to search the internet
If the driver is found windows will install it and may ask for a restart

If the updated driver is not found, follow the above instructions but do not select "Update Driver" select "Properties"
and under the "General" tab your sound device and manufacturer is displayed

Search the internet for the required drivers

Computer shuts down periodically with error message

You have one of two reason for this problem. The AC97 is your sound device in your PC. When windows went to use the AC97 either the device it self is defective or the software somehow became corrupt.
Lets check the driver in your PC. Left click the start button, slide up to & open control panel, open System icon. System Properties window will open. Click the hardware tab, than click the device manager button. Scroll down to the + sign next to Sound, video and game conreoller. Do you see a yellow ! point any where? If your answer is yes than your sound device AC97 needs the driver software re-installed. You did not post the model number of your PC or the manufacture's name for your PC.
Ex: Acer, Dell, Hp ect.
Model numbers ex: Aspire E500, Inspiron 530, Pavilion a6450z ect.
With that information I can go to their web site & find your correct (possible updated) software for your AC97 sound driver.
I can guid you to the web site & have you download the driver software & save it on your PC. (untill than).
Your PC came with a manual & Cd's. You can load each cd & search for the sound driver for your AC97 sound card. Once found you can install the sound cards software for your version of windows.
If you post the requested information I will find your needed software.

If you have more questions feel free to ask.

Have a great weekend!

Realtek AC'97 driver

Before installing the AC97 software drivers, open System than click the Hardware tab than click Device manager. Scroll down to Sound, video & game controllers. Do you see a yellow ! point? If so than your drivers do need to be reinstalled. I could send you to Asus's site but they are a bit out dated so go here for updated drivers. The first one listed under Description will do just fine.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
When you open the sound, video & game controller find AC97 & uninstall by right clicking on AC97 & uninstall. Only the AC97, leave the rest alone. Restart the PC than install the new drivers that you saved to your hard drive.
Check driver installed by opening controll panel than open Sound & Audio Device icon. Under Audio tab Realtek AC97 should be listed than click the Voice tab & the same should be listed.
Test both Audio & Mic functions. If either fail your intergrated controller could be defective. Lets hope everything works fine.
