Gateway fpd2185w capacitor fix question

I saw the comments on the site and i was wondering if someone could please answer a few questions for me .. my monitor began to not power on just flashing the blue light and the gateway logo ..well after reading the suggestions on the site i took my case apart and have found two of the capacitors to be bulging at the top .. i have just two questions ... one is... would it be ok to just replace these two bulging ones or should i replace all 8 ..and then question two ...as i havent done any soldering before do i need to put the soldering iron on the two points underneath the old capacitors to melt the old solder off and then add new solder to connect the new capacitors or is there another way to remove the old solder. thanks for any help

To take solder off you can get some cross wire called DESOLDER this copper wire soaks up the old solder, by heating this new desolder the old solder will jump into it and clear your way. I like the Techspray #3 no-clean model 1822-5f
and its made in the USA!

Very important, use a pencil iron only, you can destroy the film on the board if you use too much heat. Go for the two bulging ones first. After you remove the capacitors if the holes fill over use a straight pin or similar to open the hole to accept the new part. Also whatch for the polarity on the one you remove, should have a + sign on one side. Make sure the new one goes back in the same way.

Sexyone, my gateway monitor screen is black whrn I plug in the power cord and connect to my computer how do i get it to work

Open the monitor, examine the circuit boards. Look for small components that look like small cans, these are capacitors. If you see any that look bulged on top, then your problem can probably be solved by replacing these. Check out the following sites;

I HAVE A Gateway FPD2185W that goes on for a split second then goes black I have already changed the 8 capacitors that i was told to change is there anything else i can do because it still does the same...

make sure there are no briged solder connections. make sure all the inside connectors were properly inserted into the connection on the boards. Check to see if you have the correct input settings by pressing the pushbuttons on the right lower side of the monitor. check all cables or switch to dvi or agp cables.

Gateway fpd2185w stopped working and will not show a screen

Check power supply capacitors for bulging top, replace them with PANASONIC FM or FC series from digikey.com

Help me please - Gateway FPD2185W

Ok, I have some news on this that I know you will not like, but the whole point of this site is to try and help you fix the problem, or at least, try and point you in the right direction.

The news:
I have done some extensive searching on this problem over the last month, as I have also had a friend with a similar problem that you are describing. There is a manufacturer's fault on the main power board, this has been recognised by Gateway, but as it happens inconsistantly (it may happen after a few months or a few years), they are not prepared to recall the product.

Obviously this doesn't help us as consumers that buy their products. The blue screen that you describe happens with alot of visual hardware inc. graphics cards that affects the whole market, and has now become affectionately known as The Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD).

If you are one of the lucky one's, and it is still under the manufacturer's warranty, get it sent back asap, and ask for a replacement to a similar model. If not, the only thing you can do is get it repaired or get a new/2nd-hand one.

Like I said, I'm sorry this isn't the news you wanted, but I didn't think it was fair for you to hang on.

Regards
Tim

Trying to fix lcd Gateway Monitor.

There's a couple capacitors you need to replace. On the video board, not the power supply board. There is (3) 470uf16v on the video board. They have to be the smaller ones, you can not use the larger ones (they will not sit flush onto the board) Any questions, e-mail me at Andrew@CreativeAudio.biz

Monitor Will not come on anymore

I and many many many others like you have the same problem. The suggested solution is to replace the capacitors on the board. (look for the "blotted" ones). This may be too complicated for most and should NOT cost more than $75. BOTTOM line: DON'T BUY THIS MONITOR AND DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM GATEWAY!
