The tunner is soldered to the motherboard.

This is common with drive problems.
Could also be a power supply getting hot.

not without a subscription to Directv. after it enters the box it is basicly a Directv signal, it has to show up on the program guide.

the are some new features that tivo does not support. you still can watch your saved programs. Sadly the older tivos are equipped for the digital transitoins. I know Tivo and Directv are releasing a new receiver in a few months.

go to your settings page and run the initial setup. make sure each section is done correctly. the tivo might take a second to start downloading the locals.

call directv and ask them to send a signal to unlock your controls. they will only do it if you are the account holder

Do the buttons on the front panel of the unit work?

If so, try doing this:

Hit the tivo button, go down to messages and setup and into to system information. Go down a few screens until you see remote code. Hold (on your remote) the tivo button and pause button for about 5 seconds. Then hit 0-9 on your remote to set the code. It's a single digit code only. You'll see your remote light flash. Now, try hitting the back button and see if your remote works. If it does, great. If it doesn't that means one or more of the following:

1) Your remote is defective
2) Your IR receiver on the unit isn't working correctly.

If #2 is the problem, you'll need to open up the unit, powered down! and make sure the thin, greyish ribbon cable in the front of the motherboard is 100% in. If it's not all the way in, it will cause issues.
