Nikon D70 Shutter Problem

I have had my Nikon D70 for about a year now, I purchased it used. A couple months ago the shutter began malfunctioning. First, when you push the shutter release down there is no reaction and ''E r r'' flashes on the top LCD. After awhile, if you release the shutter, the mirror will go up, but not long enough or very smoothly. ''E r r'' still flashes. This does not happen all the time, but it seems to malfunction at the worst moments, right before I'm going to take a picture. I have since upgraded, but I would like to know how much this problem may cost to fix. I'm trying to decide whether to fix it first or try to sell it as is.

I have a Nikon D70 which failed completely but exhibited similar symptoms.
I was fortunate in that I had taken out 3 years free warranty at the point of purchase and therefore saved the £90 (sterling) repair cost.
Nikon cameras are designed to be robust and should give a lifetime's service. Most should give 150,000 shutter actuations.
There is a piece of free software available on the Web that will tell you how many actuations were recorded on your recent photos.
Unfortunately, in the fast moving world of digital cameras, the value of a 2nd user older camera is very low.
You need to decide if you were outgrowing this camera body and want to replace it with something better or whether you would be lost without it. My repair took more than 1 month and I was not able to take any photos during his time.
I hope this helps.

Shutter won't operate

Usually when my shutter won't operate, I get an ERR message. I have been able to fix it by turning the camera off and back on. If that doesn't work, I have occasionally had to remove and reinstall the battery.

The D-90 users manual says that the ERR message indicates a camera malfunction and can be cleared by releasing the shutter. But, I found the shutter won't release unless you turn the camera off.

The manual also says if this condition occurs frequently or persists, you should contact an Nikon authorized repair center. I suggest before you do that, that you contact Nikon tech support at www.nikon.com to see what they might suggest.

The mirror in the my nikon d 70 is stuck in the middle and gives me message ERROR and LO F4 when i push to take a picture.

Try setting the camera to the 'M' manual mode and remove the lens. See if the shutter will fire and complete the cycle. You should have a memory card installed or have the menu set to 'No CF card'. If the shutter does fire, then re-mount the lens and return the mode to 'P'. If it does not fire the shutter, then it is likely the there is a malfunction with the mirror box components (a broken spring). That type of repair is not a DIY and will require a complete dis-assembly of the camera.

Err on the lcd of nikon d70

If you've tried removing and reattaching the lens, removing and reinstalling the memory card, and anything else you can think of then it's probably locked up just like mine did a month or two ago. Googling the problem turned up a few with the same troubles but no solutions other than to take it to a service agent for repair. Sorry, can't tell you exactly what was replaced as I don't have the paperwork with me but I do recall it was a $12 part that cost $260 in labour to fit!!

Error message on D70 freezing camera operations

Hello,
I got this info from Nikon for D70...
When you see Err on the control panel, LCD monitor or viewfinder of your digital camera it refers to a camera malfunction. Try the following:
  1. Remove all accessories from the camera.
  2. Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
  3. If your Nikon camera offers resets such as the two-button reset or a hardware reset please follow those instructions provided in the product manual.
If these steps do not resolve the Err message we recommend having a Nikon Authorized Repair Technician evaluate the Nikon camera.
Hope this be useful for you to resolve problem.

D70 Shutter Stuck

I'm afraid the camera has suffered "shutter death". After a certain number of clicks (usually 30.000-70.000, but it could be as little as 5000 or as much as 150.000), the shutter just gives up the ghost. It's fixable, but expensive.
