Question about Samsung HCL4715W 47" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Blue CRT issues?

We have a 2003 Samsung HCL4715W. A month ago we replaced the convergence board on it to fix problems with red wavy lines, and the TV has worked brilliantly since then. When we replaced it, we noticed what appeared to be a puddle of water inside and wondered if some rain (we had moved it from one house to another) had gotten inside or if one of the kids had spilled something that splashed through.

This morning the TV started flashing a bright blue screen and clicking on and off. When we removed the back, the mysterious puddle was there again, this time appearing to leak from the blue CRT onto the board below.

Also, when we shine a light into the red tube, red is reflected back. When we shine a light into the green tube, green is reflected back. When we shine a light into the blue tube, white is reflected back.

How do we fix the leak? I think this is coolant fluid if my research is right, but we have no idea how to fix the leak or what the reflecting white means (if anything). Help? Please?

Could you please tell me what the part number is for the blue CRT drive circuit board? I can find the info in the service manual for circuit boards, but cannot tell if it is the set of 3 (those in my tv are hard wired together) or if it is an individual board, whether its for blue, red, or green. Thank you!

re: (Samsung HCL4715W) Yes the puddle is related to the Blue CRT coolant leaking. You are most likely going to need a new Blue CRT drive circuit board and quite possibly a new Blue CRT if the CRT got too hot from not haveing a sufficent supply of coolant. You can get replacement CRT drives and CRts at the following link.

Our samsung HCl4715W tv is all connected right but our picture is scrambled where you see double exposure and the color is off. Can not find our manual. any suggestions?

The problem of your tv is the convergence. Projection tv set has a 3 colors red, blue and green this 3 colors must be properly lined up to look the video normal. When this 3 colors is not properly aligned the video will produce a double image of color or like a 3d or wavy. In order to fix this problem you should adjust it in the menu program of your tv you should move any of the colors to up or down, left or right if you cannot align the 3 colors the problem is the convergence ic it must be replace. To locate the convergence ic you should remove the back cover of your tv but be sure to unplug your tv, you will see this ic attached in a large aluminum plate it has a marking of stk--- and followed by a numbers. or you could contact a service technician do do it for you and save you from stress. Good day and best regards.

My screen on my samsung hcl4715w has split into blue and red pictures right next to each other. I have a feeling that it is a bulb that is out. I just need to know which one.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms

IF THE SCREEN IS ALL RED WITH VIDEO VISIBLE AND RETRACE LINES. ADJUST SCREEN CONTROL IN THE FRONT FOR THE RED TUBE ONLY. TURN CONTROL COUNTER CLOCKWISE. IF THAT DOESNT DO IT THE TUBE CAN BE REJUVINATED.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
