Some of the letters, also have numbers. How do I get it to type just the Letters? Why are those numbers on the letters any way. I get the mouse pad, and l and r buttons. But what are the 3 buttons at the top of the mouse pad for? Go
Check to see if Num Lock is turned on. Depending on your computer, it may light up the key with a green light, or a green light may be lit near the part of the computer where the screen is connected to the computer.

You may have hit a certain combination of keys on your Gateway laptop and turned on the NumLock function accidentally. The result is that the rectangle of keys from the 7 key down to the question mark key have become a number-entry keypad. Worse, Gateway manuals don't discuss this function.
Hold down the "Fn" key on the bottom row of the keyboard, and press the "NumLk" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "F11" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the F11 key and "Scroll Lk" key simultaneously. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "F9" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "Scroll Lk" key. Type the letters UIO. They should come up as letters. If none of these help, then it's probably a keyboard malfunction and you'll need to get it repaired.
The layout of keys can differ with different model and make laptops. The keys with letters and numbers on them are used with the Num Lock key, if you press the Num Lock key them keys will type numbers instead of letters. If you press that key again they will type letters as normal.
The keys with icons on them are used with the function (Fn) key. That means that you hold down Fn and and use the F keys to adjust things like brightness, volume, mute and Wireless radio etc.

Find word "Search" - type in confusing letters.
Hey this happened to me too. Then I realized that the number lock was on which makes a combination of letters and numbers. Is it that U makes a 4. I makes 5. O makes 6. J makes 1. M makes 0. K makes 2. And L makes 3. If so hold the Fn button and then F11.
