I have inherited a Compaq Armada 1592 DMT that I would like to set up for a grandchild. It is locked and I cannot get past the log in screen. I do have some recovery boot disks for passwords but it appears even the CD drive is locked. HELP
There are Linux password recovery programs on the Internet that allow you to remove the passwords on User accounts.
You can Google search and download the program, you then need to make a boot CD with this program.
ALternately you can purchase a copy of Windows XP or Vista and wipe Windows 2K and install XP or Vista on the laptop.
You need to boot up from the CD, some laptops allow you to boot up by selecting a alternate boot device other that the hard disk, press F12 when you switch on the laptop and select the CD drive.
Otherwise you need to change the boot order in the BIOS, after you installed XP you can change it back to the hard drive as the first boot device if you wish, but it is not necessary. To get into the BIOS sertup press F1 or F2 or F10 (it could be one of these it depends upon your model laptop)
You will need drivers for the various devices that is installed on your laptop that XP does not recognise, download them from another computer that has access to the Internet then goto www.compaq.com to the support/download page and download the XP drivers for the video, audio, modem, network card etc. You then copy the drivers to say a USB memory sttick and install them on the laptop after you installed XP.

Ok the first step to try is logging into administrator most people never set a password on this account. if this does not work there is free software to remove passwords just let know and I can get the name of what I has used before.

It is the atypical Log On to Windows box waiting for User Name and Password. I do not have any supporting material for the machine, manuals or recovery disks.
I think it is Windows 2000 Professional with NT Technology. I wish I knew more about he machine, but Mom and Dad had it and who knows what happened to the manuals, recovery disks, etc. It does boot up in Windows 2000. It shows the regular log in screen, and then changes to a blank blue logging in screen and the log in box waiting for the User Name and Password.
The computer does not appear to be recognizing the CD when I boot it up. I'm not sure this is locked as part of the problem. I do have a new, good copy of Windows XP to install is I can get into the computer to do it.
What would happen if I took out the battery that hold the memory in the system? Would this erase the info and allow me to return to original boot in?
I'm looking for any solution to the problem that will help.
Thanks
WHICH WINDOWS IS IT? The more you help me, the more I can help you.
The log in screen that you are speaking of, Is this the Operating System log in, or the Bios password, The easiest way to tell, is if the computer is off, when you turn it on, how many different things do you see? For example, Maybe a Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP screen? Or is it a black screen that says input password?
Any chance you have the recovery disk to reinstall the OS? If so, have you done a cold boot and tried to boot from that disk?
