Question about GE 30" Self-Cleaning Freestanding Gas Range - Stainless-Steel

Open Question

I have a GE JGBP26GEJ range using LP. The burners work fine, and the oven works fine. But if I have just turned the burner on, and then the oven, or have the oven on first and then turn the burn(s) on, the burners will either go out, or sputter and then go out. If the burner has been going for a while when I turn the oven on, that burner will stay lit, but any burner turned on afterward will go out. If I turn the oven off and turn the burners on for a few minutes I can then turn the oven on and everything works. I've had several technicians check the range out, with no success.

The range burners and jets have been cleaned and the regulator has been changed out at least once. The stove was set up originally as lp/propane. The pressure has also been adjusted at least once also. We have a propane tank supplying the gas for heater, water heater, dryer, and stove. The symptoms with the stove occurs even if nothing else is running at the time. The stove is 22 years old and has been doing this for the entire life of the unit. The only unit that gives any problems is the gas stove. At least 4 different technicians from different repair companies have looked at the stove but have been unable to reproduce problem.

I have the identical problem with my GE JM2326565 range with top oven (self-cleaning). The range is 14 years old and the problem started approximately two years ago. In addition, I sometimes smell gas while cooking. Several repairmen have checked the range but all say because of its age, they are unable to computerize the problems and repair parts are nile.

    has anyone checked your regulator?

have they checked to make sure your orifices on the burners are all clean and clear. are the orifices for lp or propane?i do not see any recalls or service flashes for this problem but in the past with this , i have had a bad regulator, or the wrong orificaes installed

SOURCE: top burners often wont light if oven is already lit

I have fix that problem before, the oven heat is soficating the top burners, you will have to adjust top burners with the oven on, so that they will light by them selfs.Or put a shield under the cook top section on the back, so that the heat will not come to the burners where they get the oxigen.

SOURCE: burners and broiler work, but oven doesn't

If the broiler is working then the element is good. The T-stat controls the oven temp. Have you checked it?

SOURCE: The oven pilot does not light. The broiler will

If you have standing pilots, make sure the pilot for the oven/broiler is lit as well.  When you turn the thermostat up to call for heat, you should see the pilot get larger. That larger pilot flame heats a hydraulic sensor and opens the main burner valve.

Whirlpool WFG510S0AS2 range - stove burners work just fine, but both the oven and broiler does not stay lit. NOTE - this unit has been converted from natural gas to LP

when the lp conversion is done , it is normally just a jet size change that is done
however the air shroud has to also be adjusted to get a clean blue burn of the flame
The just jet change results in a slightly yellow flame which is incomplete burn of the gas and that creates carbon build up at the jet and burners causing partial blockage
I would suggest that you call in an accredited gas fitter to check the problem and if necessary , clean the jets and adjust the air shroud

Bought used ge spectra range had to change the power cord to 3 prong to fit outlet--now nothing works except light when turning burners on and clock

Did you hear a "pop" or smell like something was burning? Sounds like old oven could have been 3 phase, and you new oven single phase, Check the power requirements for oven and see what kind of power you are supplying it with.

    Burners ignite but wont light

Are you on Natural Gas or LP?

If on LP, you may need to change the jets on the burners on top. Most times, when oven and broiler work and top doesn't, and you have spark, your jets are wrong size. Look on back of unit for a cardboard attached to unit, should have jets stuck to cardboard, if notgo to store where you bought unit and buy jets.

HI thanks for your question. yes the igniter stays on all the time the flame is on, it keeps the safety valve open to give you gas. and yes the new igniter will work. thanks

Sounds like that ignitor is weak.  When the ignitor glows it builds up resistance to the gas valve for gas to come in.  If it sometimes takes 10 min then the proper resistance isn't there and this will give you that gas smell.  Replace the ignitor and this should solve your problem.  Can expect to pay $80 - $100 for the part.
