Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Garage door not closing all the way

It opens fine, but does not close all the way down with remote. It comes down half way and then goes back up again - we have to keep the button pushed to make the door go all the way down. The two sensor lights seem to be working fine (none of them is red; one of them is green and the other yellowish).

Any help; idea to fix it?

It is Craftsman, and has two sensor lights located about 3 inches high at each side of the door wall.

  • hskhan739 Jan 15, 2009

both sensor lights are on. when I put my hand infront of one, the light turns off. how do I realign them or make sure they are aligned.

You have a door sensor problem. Make sure the sensors are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking. Also check the wiring.

If the main light flashes 10 times when you try to close the door it is a sensor problem. Make sure they are not flickering ever so slightly and that they are not loose on their brackets. Tweak them a little bit.

Make sure the brackets for the sensors are tight and the small light on the sensors is not blinking ever so slightly. You also might try shading the sensor so that the sun is not shining directly into the lens.

Why does our door go up with remote but keeps running and wont go back down

i do not know what you mean by keeps on running. but if it goes up on remote but will not go down on remote, it may be because the sensors are either not aligned or that a sensor wire is broken/disconnected. try pushing and holding the manual wired opener and see if the door closes. if it does, then that is the override for a sensor issue. good luck

I have liftmaster door opener 41a5021-1d. Using the remote door closes only half way. how can I repair this problem?

When the motor stops in the down position, pull the emergency release handle. Push the door fully closed by hand then engage the emergency handle. Open the door with the remote and then close it with the remote to make sure the door closes completely.

Why won't my Genie garage door opener close without going back up.

So it seems the Main garage door unit on the ceiling is ok. The problem is with hand held unit. Usually the circuitry is ok. Try changing the battery. It has helped me. Also make sure the sensor on ceiling unit is not blocked ad is free of cobwebs.

My garage door will only open half way. It appears to be getting stuck when it is opening.

If you haven't gotten your issue fixed yet... I had the same problem (stopped opening half way when using the remote, went down fine, could lift/close manually fine as well) and this happened on our first cold weather day of the year which was very telling. Anyhow, there are two gauges/dials on your garage door opener unit itself (above, where the light is) which controls how much torque/strength your door uses to open or shut through resistance. I turned mine up some and it now works fine; what likely happened was that the metal tracks or the wood frame condensed in the cold and was providing just enough resistance to stop it when opening - as they have a security device built in to stop if they meet any resistance. Hopefully this helps!

Door goes down and when it stops at botton, it turns and goes back up ??? Need adjusting ..How can I adjust???

Adjust the position of the door by using the black and purple buttons. Black moves the door UP (open) and purple moves the door DOWN (close)
Setting the up position: 1. Press and hold the black button until the LED starts flashing slowly, then release. 2. Push and hold the black button until the door reaches the desired UP (open) position 3. Push the door control or programmed remote control. This sets the Up (open) position and begins closing the door. 4. Immediately when the door begins to close press and release the black or purple button. This will stop the door Setting the Down position: 5. Push and hold the purple button until the door reaches the desired DOWN (Closed) position. 6. Once the door is closed, If there appears to be too much pressure on the door, you may toggle the door back and forth using the black and purple buttons to reach the desired closed position. 7. Push the door control or programmed remote control. This sets the Down (closed) limit and the door should open.

The motor runs but it only opens a few inches and slowly goes back down its a chamberlain whisper drive model HD900D

Hi. I have seen this before, although usually not from chamberlain garage door openers.

Pull the release cord that unlocks the door from the opener, and manually open the door ALL the way open.

Then lock back in place in the open position.

Then use automatic opener to shut door.

It will close very slowly, but should close all the way.

Then, open the door again using the remote, and the door will once again open slowly, this time it should open all the way.

Then close door with remote, and door should now close as it is supposed, with the proper speed.

The slow opening and shutting is the system position sensor resetting itself.

This is why your door is acting up.

I would also look up by the belt drive connects to the front of the garage door opening, to make sure there isn't any dirt, cobwebs, or other obstructions on the sensor that may cause it to re-close the way it does.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Make sure both lights on the sensors stay on and don't flicker while the door is moving and the sensors are firmly attached so they don't move. Tweak them just a bit.
