HP Pavilion DV2040tx Screen Failure

Hi, hope you can help. My HP Pavilion DV2040tx Notebook has a dark screen - faint image is visible but no backlight. Computer boots normally, and will drive an external screen just fine. Out of warranty. Local PC repair shop tried a new screen power supply - no difference. I have since bought a new screen (ebay) and fitted the screen. Exact same symptoms. What should be next on my search? Additional clue: the "touch" buttons to control volume and DVD operations light up (blue) but don't respond to touch, and the mousepad on-off button also doen not turn the mousepad on and off.

    The DVD works fine. However, maybe there is ANOTHER power supply to the blue "touch" buttons and the mousepad button. What's puzzling is that the screen "works" in that a faint image is present - but no backlight. With screen power supply and screen both replaced, what is next?

    Problem identified and FIXED. Not the screen, not the screen power supply. The problem was the micro-switch within the right-hand-side screen hinge. This switch turns off the screen when you close the lid of the notebook - probably to prevent overheating. The switch had failed mechanically (technical term: "fallen to bits"). As a low-cost fix, I have flicked the switch "ON" using a jewellers' screwdriver, and removed the small metal tongue that is operated by a cam on the hinge. Thus, the switch is PERMANENTLY ON. Computer operates normally, shuts down normally using Windows. Just need to be aware not to close the lid without shutting down the computer beforehand. All the best, OzKluger

    I have a HP Pavillion DV9000 running on Vista - The computer boots; however, the screen is dark, barely visible. Ther has been no trauma - I might have been closed w/o being shut down. Any help out ther? Thanks.

    Still sound like a power supply problem to me? Power for your external monitor doesn't come for you laptop. Your DVD requires power as does the mouse..

No display on monitor

If the laptop acts as it would start and there's just no image, look at the LCD screen very closely and check if you can see a faint image on the screen. It's possible that the LCD lid close switch stuck in the "closed" position and the back-light stays off even when you open the LCD screen or turn on the laptop. The switch turns off the back-light when you close the LCD display to save the laptop battery power.

If that didn't fix it then there are 3 things that could have gone wrong:

1. Video cable connection from inverter to LCD got loose. To check this, follow instructions from step 3 on how to open the LCD and check if cable is fitted properly.

2. The video inverter is faulty
The screen inverter failure is very similar to the back-light lamp failure. In both cases the screen gets very dark and the image on the screen becomes very faint, barely visible under a bright light. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. You can replace this otherwise - you can find the inverter under the screen, follow the procedure described at point 3 to open up the screen.

3. The LCD monitor is faulty
If it works on an external monitor most likely the LCD is faulty and needs replacement. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. If not, you can do it yourself, it's pretty easy. Remove the rubber covers on the side of the screen, unscrew the screws take the plastic cover off, disconnect the video inverter and put in the new LCD after you connect the video inverter to it.

Blank screen HP DV1000 I can get video on an external monitor though

Your laptop may have video options:
* only internal LCD screen
* only external monitor (leaving your screen "dark")
* both screens.

Try toggling through the above 3 options.

After that, there's no part in the LCD screen that you can repair, by yourself.

So, if the computer is still under warranty, contact HP to exercise the warranty.

Otherwise, take the printer to a qualified technician, for proper trouble-shooting & repair.

Faint image in the background.

Hi Nate,
The same thing has happened to me before.
Well, once you drop your laptop a lot of things could go wrong. From a broken driver to a cracked screen. I believe you broke your bulb. And the cells of your laptop are kinda messed up we can say. Yes, this is fixable but will take time. I hope everything goes better!!

Good Luck

HP Pavillion DV9700 Display does not work (it is dark)

its a hardware issue the proble may be on the cable that gives display to the screen or your screen has gone

Screen is dark (like there is no power on it)

Well if you take a strong light like a flashlight and you can see a faint image. Then the lamp (CCFL) or the lamp's inverter has failed. It should work fine with an external monitor. Still not good though and usually expensive to repair (unless it is still under warranty).

Screen went almost completely dark, can barely see at all.

I had a similar problem with an HP DV2000 notebook computer. Here's the solution for the HP model DV2040TX: Problem identified and FIXED. Not the screen, not the screen power supply. The problem was the micro-switch within the right-hand-side screen hinge. This switch turns off the screen when you close the lid of the notebook - probably to prevent overheating. The switch had failed mechanically (technical term: "fallen to bits"). As a low-cost fix, I have unscrewed the main casing including the screws inside the battery compartment, removed the silver panel covering the speakers, flicked the switch "ON" using a jewellers' screwdriver, and removed the small metal tongue that is operated by a cam on the hinge. Thus, the switch is PERMANENTLY ON. Computer operates normally, shuts down normally using Windows. Just need to be aware not to close the lid without shutting down the computer beforehand. Hope this helps you. All the best, OzKluger
