Tapping virgorously on the left hand underside of the netbook (where the vents are) and the circled protrusion area* worked for me! It got the fan spinning up again...which probably got stuck due to dust, grime, or old age. Thank you so much swbrains! I'm a computer tech and overlooked the fan not spinning up!

@swbrains - Thank you! That is all I had to do. I vigorously tapped on the left-hand underside of the netbook while it was booting up...and voila the fan started spinning up again. These fans probably get stuck because these netbooks are getting old now :P and dust, grime, etc will cause tiny fans to stick. Thanks alot you fixed my issue!

Mine did the same thing -- noticed the fan wasn't running at all during bootup when the shutdown problem was occurring. Tapping the bottom ofthe case near the fan got the fan running and it booted fine after that. It happened twice in about a year's time and both times this fix worked. I'll probably take it apart soon and clean out the fan.

I just fixed this problem. My fan was not running. Mine would only stay on for about 60-90 seconds. I had to disassemble it and used compressed air on the exhaust fan that covers the CPU. I also tightened the screws on the heatsink to make sure it was getting good thermal contact, and made sure the fan was well connected. All is well. Use one of the guides to "upgrade RAM" to take it apart, then once you're in, clean the fan and make sure it's hooked up.

Try removing the battery and connecting the AC adapter then see if it boots up.
Reinstall the battery and keep the AC adapter connected and see if it boots up, if so leave it charge the battery for several hours.
If none of these work, get a replacement as there is a more segnificant problem.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck.

You may have a bad processor and it is over heating,or the over heating may be due to a dirty fan, which keeps the processor cooled off.Look under the laptop and see if you can get a peek where the fan is,to determine if it is actually dirty:)

About 10 seconds after i turn on my aspire 3690 the fan shuts down. the laptop will run for several minutes and then it shuts down also probibly from overheating. The fan starts each time i start but shuts...

First thing I'd check is for a BIOS update for your computer under the Acer support pages (acer.com). In some cases, thermal control updates are included in newer version of the BIOS, if it is a manufacturing problem.
Goto http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php and download Hardware Monitor, start the computer and immediately run the hardware monitor app to check how high the temperature on the CPU gets before it shuts down.
Continuing use under this condition may damage your Windows installation because of the sudden shutdown.

Try not to install the battery while its on. Power down the laptop then install the battery and power back on the laptop. Hope that helps.

System shuts down when opening dvd drive

The best thing for you to do in this case is send it back to Acer details can be found on thier website of how to do this. www.acer.com

If you wish to test this though, turn the laptop on and immediately eject the dvd drive whilst pressing the required key to enter the bios. Usually F2 or F12 if you can still find the Dvd drive listed in your bios when its ejected then it could be an OS problem. However if not its a hardware issue and opening the laptop will void the warranty.

I think what is happening is that when you open it in windows it causes the drive to be disconnected causing a fatal error in windows and thus it reboots or shuts down the system to prevent anymore damage.
