Hello This is a sign that the ps3 has become a heat issue.First power down the ps3.Then get a can of compressed air, sold at staples or any pc repair shop. Blow out all dust and dirt from ps3.Pay close attention to cooling fans.It may be a good idea to remove cover and clean out internal fans and motherboard. Once done wipe ps3 clean and reinstall it in a well vented area. Try ps3 again. If you still have no luck then the graphics chip may be fried. But check all your cables first.
I would think that this may be an overheating issue. The system may be shutting down in order to protect itself from further damage.
I would check and see if the PS3 fans are running 1st and 2nd blow some canned air into the unit (keep the can level) or just blow on it with you breath and see if any dust flies out, if it does the system may just be clogged with dust and a simple cleaning may help. If your really brave and the PS3 is outta warranty you can take the cover off and have a look inside to see if the fans and components are clogged with dust.
You need to clean all the dust out of the unit, you can use compressed air, but an actual air compressor works better if you can borrow one, depending on where you live lots of Car Wash places have 'em and while you're washing your car you could give your PS3 a good dusting ;)
Afterwards pointing a small mini-fan towards the PS3 while you play is a HUGE help.
your exactly right, it is a blu ray problem. Your best bet is to get a laser lens cleaning CD and run that through the system 2 or 3 times. If this doesn't work then it means that either the blu ray laser itself has died (in the case of dual lasers) or is just so jammed with dust that a lens cleaner isn't enough. At this point your going to want to call PlayStation and talk to them about getting it repaired.
your system coolers should be positioned in an open area, it makes possible the cold air to change with the hot air. when the system is overheating, it turns off to protect hardware.
try cleaning your coolers: turn the back on/off switch OFF . then, hold the eject button and turn the on/off switch ON (while holding the eject button !!)
your coolers will run in maximum speed for a while, it should set them free from any dust inside the system .
this could be a problem with over heating of the system, the ps3 will shut its self down if it getts to hot to avoid damage to the cpu and gpu, the easyest option is to try and get a 3rd party cooler for the ps3 or if you have any tech knollage try cleaning out any dust around fans inside, this could include using a vacum cleaner to **** out the dust or a can on air duster which is a tin of air used to blow out dust ,
ether way dont open you console inless its out of warranty as opening ur ps3 will invauldate ur warranty and sony will not want to know and charge you a hefty fee
It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.
