Heat can cause this issue. Try using some compressed air and blow out the fans and heat sync.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305 S5907. Every so often it completely shuts down right in the middle of something. What causes this?

Usually a complete shutdown like that indicates a heating issue. You can try http://www.hmonitor.com/ to monitor the temperatures if it's supported on that system. Toshiba's are kind of notorious for fans on the bottom of the laptop. Try using the laptop on a table instead of "your lap", or maybe invest in a laptop cooling pad. (look on amazon for some with good reviews.) It is possible that you have a bad fan as well which would need to be repaired.

I have an acer 5520 laptop,it has started shutting of without any warning even though plugged in and fully charged

Causes:

1. Overheat

Most cases this is caused by a over heat where the system fan gets blocked or there is not enought air flow, this can damage the system cpu.

Other known causes

AC/ adapter needs to be replaced some case were found that the ac adapter would be the cause as well it would be something to have checked out.

Now if the system shuts off without the ac adapter and its running on the battery as well you might want to look at the overheat issue.

thanks for using fixya please do be considerate and post you ratings and feedback for your answer today.

I have an hp dv5 -just out of warranty, thanks- it will shut off in the middle of starting up the Sims 3. I wanted to see if Sims 3 is causing the issue, so I plugged in my ext HD to move saved games etc,...

This is what i would do is clean the fan out real good and make sure that its not over heating. If that does not fix then most likely *********** board is going bad.

The fans run but the computer fails to turn on

Likely either a bad power connector (common) or the charging circuit on the motherboard may have a problem.

Laptop suddenly shut off and will not turn back on

Sometimes the voltage regulator in the battery hit a point where they fall below a certain efficiancy % they have to operate at. Once they fall below that % you must replace them, even if the battery is 100% charged. Its usually a good idea to pick up a new charger as well with a new battery since they are known to die as well. Make sure you check the socket in the back where your charger plugs into the laptop to make sure its not loose or cracked. Sometimes the plug will crack off the motherboard and not make good enough contact.. But regardless of that it should atleast turn on if the battery was charged and good. Best bet, new battery. Every 2 years you should get a new one.

soundslike it could be overheating, check the system fan and buy a can of compressed air and blast it through the vents and fan systems, hopefully this will resolve the problem

Acer Aspire 9502WSMi Shuts Down When Upper Parts Are Pressed!

This sounds like a short of some kind from the motherboard touching either the body or some other peice of hardware, or you have a broken soldered joint on the board causing the problem. I would take to a qualified repairer.
