Question about IBM ThinkPad R51 Notebook

1 Answer

R51 will only start on battery.

If i charge the battery in another computer it will come on. But only will run off of battery. I changed out the jack with the good one from the machine i was charging the battery on and it still doesnt come on with wall power.

I read there is a battery fuse that would prevent battery charging but it would still work on wall power. Any sugestions are welcome.

When i said the jack what i ment was the port on the computer.

Also im a computer repair shop so i have alot of cords and other things around. Usualy i would just replace the motherboard and not try to repair it. But this computer is for my little cousin as he took really good care of it and his stepdad broke it on him.

Im really looking for info if there is a fuse on the motherboard somehwere between the jack connection and where the power gets dispursed on the motherboard to the battery, cpu, chipset, etc.

There is a fuse on the motherboard too. I did find it but its fine. Thats the battery to jack fuse i found.

Well it sound pretty much like power is not reaching the laptop components so neither the computer turns nor charges the battery using the power adaptor. You mention that you used the power adaptor from other laptop (hopefully same model he he) so it is clear that the fault is not it.

It might be the power "inlet" , I mean the socket where the plug is inserted, it can always get broken.

Another theory is that it might be the power regulation circuit on the mainboard.

In both cases it requieres to send the laptop to be repaired.

A home made "solution" might be to dissassemble your laptop and test the power on the mainboard using a Voltmetter, this requieres some skils so if you decide to try it be cautionous.

Good luck!!

Mhhh... Fuse is on battery, not at the mainboard. :(

Asus UL50VT always shows charging

Either your battery or the power cord has an issue. Does the battery ever fully charge and make the charging light disappear or turn green? If not the battery could be bad.

Try running the computer off the battery by removing the power cord. if the battery starts losing charging strength real quick then your battery is bad. I've see bad batteries that say they are 100% charged but as soon as you remove the power cord it gets down to 5% i a matter of minutes.

Try running the computer on just the power cord. If it stays on and lets you operate without any problem then the power cord is good. A good power cord will not charge a bad battery.

If the laptop does not let you stay on long with the power cord, then either the power cord is bad or the DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the laptop is bad. If either of them is bad they will not charge a good battery.

Check your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

When i charge my acer aspire the power button flashes

The DC jack in the laptop is showing early signs of intermittent issues, the jack is solded to the motherboard which sometimes breaks free over time, this is something that will eventually need to be addressed.

Computer is not charging the battery.

Your DC connector is probably loose from the system board:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.
3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.
4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead.
No power LED or battery charge LED activity.
5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by re-soldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it

The power adapter MUST BE a Dell brand power adapter.
If it is, then the socket that was replaced is not the right part.
Of course, the laptop can work just fine with the power adapter, it justwon't charge the battery.

First, the simple things need to be checked. Is the power supply line, from the wall socket to the computer input socket, in good condition. Best test is to try it on a known working Thinkpad or with a multimeter if one is handy.
Second, connect to an outside monitor to rule out faulty laptop monitor. If the known working monitor paired with the R51 works perfectly then you know it is your screen.
Third, does moving or flexing the computer by its base when running exacerbate the problem?

That will get some preliminary data.

My BAttery Won't Charge

The issue is most likely with the power jack within the back of the laptop. Many laptops have problems with the solder joints that connect the jack to the motherboard cracking or the jack itself failing. It can be replaced, but it involves disassembling the computer down to the motherboard, removing the old jack, and installing a new jack. eBay is a good source for new jacks, but it's best to have the old jack in hand before purchasing the new one, for comparison.
