HP Pavilion laptop will not start up - screen is blank

My daughter was home from college over the holidays, and her HP Pavilion laptop will not start up. The LED's at he top of the keyboard come on, as well as the power and charging indicators on the front. The disk drive light illuminates at start up, but does not stay lit. The screen is blank, the unit does not boot up. Could this be a hard drive issue? Motheroard?

My notebook does not boot. When I turn it on, the power light, the IDE light and battery light, lights up. But, when I turn it on the screen is black and it merely makes a boot noise for less than a second and thats it. Black screen. I have reset the memory, but nothing. Can someone please help me. I dont know how to test the hard drive.

The above is good advice but it wont be motherboard...
bootup and get as far as you can get then press and hold the power button(about 5 secs) reboot now if you still cant access reinstall os.though black screen usually relates to mem fault or faulty hd sectors but mem faults usually beep to indicate theres fault....with hd ...if you take it out give the terminals on both the hd and seating a clean and replace it making sure its seated properly usually does the trick...over a period of time knocks and bumps can dislodge the hd so reseating is all thats required usually.hope this helps and its nothing more serious

HI,
Most likely is Motherboard, but sometimes re-seatting the CPU can solve the problem. also check the computer, has,nt been put into sleep/hibernation or standby mode.
First i,d remove the memory, and if it,s got 2 sticks of RAM, try with 1. Could be faulty Memory. Next would be to remove CPU, and re-seat with new thermal compound. failing this, you can assume motherboard fault.

Thankyou For Using Fixya.

Most likely a hard drive issue. You can try to reload it with the cd,but I am guessing that the drive died.Their are hard drive test programs available that wil run w/o the windows.   A popular one I have used is called seagate tools.

You need to replace the motherboard. When nothing comes on the display this means the bios on the motherboard is bad and the board and cpu need replaced.

Are you sure everything is plugged in correctly? Look on the cord and make sure there are no "shorts" in it becuase sometimes it can have a "short" circuit to it, even if it's new!
