OK. FInally got it. Got the transmission and new clutch ready to go in, but the transmission will not go far enough to go over the mounting bosses. And while worrying with it a pin about 1 1/2" long flat on one side with a hole in the end fell out. I have no idea where it came from or what it does. I think it is time to haul this to the junk yard and get a new one.

Hey no problem here easy fix.. fist off noever mind the little brass pin that fell out, that is merely a shipping pin {3 are in unit) after install they remain under machine in little white/opaque plastic cups, you can discard. now as far as transmission, you cant seem to fit it back into the housing far enought to tighten the 3 1/2 in bolt in place, is this correct??? if that s the case you need to drop the transmission back down slightly and with your hand grab hold of the white teardrop plastic gear that is housed in the brake/drive assembly adn by twisting hte plastic youll release the outer springl;oaded brake shoes(just like a brake drum on a car, and while releasing the brake you can push the entire assembly up into the machine the 1in or so htat you are shy , it might want to fall back down but when oyou see how it works youll get it the n the transmission will easily resecure to the mounting posts.

How do you Replace starter drive on 1984 harley fxr

Sorry 1984 is back beyond my expertise and/or knowledge but later model years jackshaft might be somewhat similar:

Disconnect the negative battery cable. THEN remove the primary cover. (If you are only going to service the items from the bolt through to the spring it is not necessary to remove clutch but if it is desired to replace the coupling and/or the retaining ring it will also require starter removal. So, bearing that in mind, if necessary, next remove the clutch assembly. THEN while holding the pinion gear in place remove the jackshaft bolt, the lockplate and the thrust washer and remove the jackshaft from the inner primary as an assembly. THEN remove the pinion gear from the jackshaft and then remove the coupling and the spring. The spring and the retaining ring are inside the coupling. Replace the retaining ring if deemed necessary. ALSO if the coupling is forced through the primary case oil seal you will necessarily have to replace the seal as it will be ruined. THEN remove the coupling from the starter shaft and if needed replace the retaining ring. The jackshaft must be installed back onto the starter shaft prior to installing the jackshaft with the shallow side of the coupling going/facing towards the jackshaft and also facingthe jackshaft splines. Remember to reinstall the coupling retaining ring if it was removed. ALSO, be sure to install the coupling on the starter output shaft with the counter bore facing the jackshaft. THEN put the spring inside the coupling and install the pinion gear on the shaft put the lockplate and the thrust washer on the bolt and put the bolt in place in the jackshaft. If you removed the retaining ring put it back on shaft and then slide the jackshaft assembly back into position in the inner primary. In order to hold the lockplate and thrust washer in place be certain that the lockplate tab is properly in the keyway. THEN, having aligned the lockplate tab and thrust washer properly in the slot with the jackshaft keyway screw the jackshaft bolt into the starter shaft and while holding the pinion gear in position tighten the bolt to 84-108 in-lbs (9.5-12.2 Nm) and bend the locking tab against bolt head. THEN reinstall the clutch assembly etc. and the primary case etc using new gaskets as required etc., refill the primary with oil, reconnect the negative battery cable and check to be sure you have not forgotten anything.

Can you replace tyhe a/c pully woyhout the compressor

Yes you could, however you need a compressor clutch holding tool to remove the compressor clutch retaining bolt. After that you can take off the a/c clutch spacer and hub. When that is out of the way you have to remove the clutch pulley retaining snap ring with snap ring pliers. Then the a/c clutch pulley will come off.

My '99 Silverado 1500 Z71 has been an awesome dependable truck with over 225000 miles. But we've suddenly lost the reverse gear. The drive gears work fine & the tranny fluid is fine so what would cause...

No reverse, here are few things you can try before needing to take it to a tranny shop. The 4l60e trans is a fully electronic trans. And being so the problem could be as simle as the reverse shift solenoid has shortted out. Along that same line the reverse valve could be stuck and or the little screen that is attatched to the mid plat could be clogged and in order fix this problemyou need to drop out the valve boby and for the most part rebuild the reverse circute.

Now for the hard stuff. Other problems you could look at.
imput housing assembly - 3-4 apply ring stuck in applied position.
- forward clutch not releasing
- turbine shaft seals missing, cut or damaged.

manual linkage - not adjusted

oil pump assembly - retainer and ball assembly missing or damaged.
- stator shaft seal rings or ring grooves damaged.
- stator shaft sleeve scored or damaged.
- revers boost valve stuck, damaged or misassembled.
- cup plug missing.
- restricted oil passage.
- faces not flat.
- converter clutch apply valve stuck.

valve body assembly - 2-3 shift valve stuck.
- manual linkage not adjusted.
- spacer plate and gaskets incorrect, misposition or damaged.

reverse input clutch - clutch plate worn.
- reverse input houeing and drum assembly cracked at weld.
- clutch plate retaining ring out of groove.
- return spring asembly retaining ring out of groove.
- piston deformed or dished.
- seals cut or damaged.
- retainer and ball assembly not sealing.
- restricted apply passage.

lo and reverse clutch - clutch plates worn.
- clutch plate retaining ring mispositioned.
- porosity in piston.
- seals damaged.
- return spring assembly retaining ring mispositioned.
- restricted apply passage.

case - cover plate gasket missing or damaged.
- cover plate not torgued correctly.
- porosity.

now thhis came from my 4l60 service book.
hope this helps

Thank you for using fixya and be safe

Whirlpool washing machine clutch replacement

Thanks for using FixYa. For servicing the clutch you’ll need to first remove the gear case. The gear case can be removed by first removing the outer cabinet. After removing the cabinet, remove the pump and motor assembly. Now carefully lay down the washer on its back and remove the 3 bolts securing the gear case. Now pull the gear case straight out from the tube support assembly. Now, compress the clutch spring with a pair of pliers and lift the lining from the clutch hub. To remove entire clutch assembly begin by removing the spin tube thrust washer up & off the agitator and then remove the tube support ring. Remove the retainer ring and lift the clutch hub up and off spin pinion.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

it is very hard to get the ring on front load washers,
it is much easier to remove the top. bottom and the front control panel
then the door and support panel.
now you have access.
some times you have to remove the counter weight in some models before putting on the ring.
if you can do it without removing these items you are very very good.
