Your laptop has a wireless network card internally.

This is used to connect to a wireless, usually broadband, network so you can access the internet, use email etc.

In order to connect to the wireless network you require the key/password usually, this prevents other computer users in the area of the network from connecting to your network and in effect stealing your broadband usage allowance, which is illegal, well at least it is in the UK.

You need a broadband wireless router or modem/router to use this method of connection.

If you have a standard ethernet or usb broadband modem you can still connect the laptop using an ethernet or usb cable,

hope this helps

Hi it sounds like you are trying to connect to a wireless network with your daughter's laptop. A network key is essentially a password you need to access the wireless network. The adminstrator of the network would have set one up when they set up the network.

If this is your wireless network then you probably wrote it down somewhere. It is also possible you are trying to connect to somebody elses network by accident. If this is the case you must select the correct network (assuming you have wireless). If you are using Windows XP you should see an icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen with the clock) that yo can right click on to view networks.

I should note that if you have a wired connection you only need to plug it into the laptop like you would with any tower computer.

It my be the amount of devices connected? Try shutting down all but one, the laptop. It's possible you have a defective wireless device? If you connect the Laptop via a Ethernet Cable does it connect and work well? Turn off every thing, unplug remove battery from everything. install battery in the ISP modem , if applicable, plug in, allow self test, plug in Netgear, allow self test, plug in Laptop only, connect to wireless, enter security key. post results. Have you done any firmware upgrades on the Netgear? Wireless card connecting to network but not able to connect to internet

Hi,
It is possible that your Network key/Security password is incorrect one reason why you can connect to he Network but not get any internet, or the router setting is set only to provide wireless internet on a number of devices all at once.
Depends on the router you have check the setting and see if it is set to limited number of devices that can connect to the internet or try disabling the Network/Security Key and try connecting to the network and see if you can get internet, if you do then the Network key is the issue.

Why wont my acer netbook allow me to enter the network centre or to connect to virgin internet either wired or wireless. i'm running linux lite not windows

go to the command line and type ifconfig

find the network adapter you are trying to connect with likely eth0 or eth1 if ethernet or wlan0 for wifi

then type

dhclient wlan0 (or whatever adapter you're using.)

if this doesn't give you an ip address, the virgin internet access point may not play nice with linux.

Hi My daughter droped the battrey off her notbook and now she cant get on the internet, but its detected the wireless conection

there is no problem with the battery in terms of the connection. Battery only supplies power to turn on the laptop. if the battery has malfunctioned and wasn't able to turn on your laptop, you can use your laptop's power cord.

the issue here, is that you can connect to the internet. all she needs to do, is go to Network Connections, chose the wireless connection, clicked Properties, scrolled down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), go to Properties and changed the setting to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' then applied the changes.

Can't connect to the internet through wireless on my daughter's acer laptop

Your daughter's wireless card in her laptop needs to be configured with the router's wireless settings eg. the SSID and encryption key
The encryption key in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the laptop to connect to this wireless router.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Wifi problem, please help me and my daughter.

Hello Lan, the best way to connect to your network would be using WZC utility right in windows, to make sure this is turned on follow the link below http://tech.ifelix.net/2007.html
After its turned on go Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center. After entering here choose your network, if your modem has a security key (WPA, WEP, ETC..) make sure to enter that correctly. If all is well it should connect without a problem.
Hope this helps, if this doesnt work comment and i will give further assistance

Just got new modem and router, main PC on home

Right-click the network connection and click REPAIR, see if that resolves.
If you are getting a Valid IP address (192.168.x.x) then that should help. If you are getting a (169.254.x.x) APIPA address, then you are not getting network connectivity. That may involve the Wireless Security Key, or the security protocol (If using WPA the card in a 1100 may not support that protocol)
