My local Panasonic say there is nothing wrong with the remote but it will not operate the machine. I can only use the machine maually. It would be nice to know if this is something simple as it's a real pain taking all the kit back to the Panasonic service centre then setting it all up again later!!!

Ok let me verify; you have an HT-520 home theatre with integrated DVD player. When you press the DVD input you can't control certain aspects of the DVD player or the DVD player does not respond at all?
Does the DVD respond at all if you put the remote into another mode (should be called Amp or Receiver)? Can your remote be programmed for different devices and mabe it was programmed to control a different DVD player?
I will search the unit in my knowledge base and let you know some exact steps to try. If you could clarify some of thoes details that would be wonderful.
I found that since the Panasonic TH50PZ80U TV has only 2 HDMI ports on the back of the TV, the best solution for me was to use component (red, blue, green) cables to connect the Home Theatre to the TV. I suppose I/you could connect the home theatre to the HDMI port on the front panel, but I don't want cables hanging out the front of the TV (personal preference). Unfortunately, I am no longer able to use the VIERA Link functionality available by connecting all Panasonic components to each other using HDMI cables, but I feel it's a small price to pay for the incredible picture quality acheived by using the HDMI cable to connect the HD Cable Box to the TV. I may yet be able to control everything using the HD Cable Box remote, but I haven't gotten that far yet but I've got Comcast coming on Saturday and hopefully they can let me know if this is possible: let me know if you have a solution.
So here are the components and the cable types used to connect:
HD Cable Box to TV: HDMI cable & Optical Audio cable
Home Theatre to TV: Red, Blue & Green component cables
Once you have connected your dvd player to your tv and the tv is turned on.
Turn on the machine and press "disc" on the remote control.
Open/Eject the disc tray.
Press STOP on the remote control.
Enter the following numbers slowly on the remote control " 7,3,4,4,6,6,0".
Configuration will appear on the bottom left hand side of the TV for three seconds.
Press "PLAY" to close the tray.
The DVD player eill return to normal operation.
This SHOULD make the player Region free.
