Replaced a HDD ? Sounds like a Graphics Adapter problem, if you connect it to a External Monitor, is it the same? How about booting to Safe Mode, still same? When does the dots/squares appear? At Boot? Does the Laptop overheat? Does it need cleaning? Fan, vents, heatsink? Does the Thermal Paste need replacing? I had a similar issue with the Graphics Adapter in a Sony Vaio, dots, lines, squares, frozen, I informed the owner it's basicly dead, unless you replace the Motherboard. If you Post the Make, Model of Laptop and the OS you are using it would be helpful.

I have a laptop that has been doing exactly the same. It started off with a fine pink line. After almost a year it now has gotten wider and has white lines and all other colours. It could work like that for quite a long period. It is a conection in the bottom of the screen but is so delicate... Only way to REALLY fix it is to have the screen replaced which could be quite an expensive thing to do
the colour sensor on the picture display may have lost functioning....as in case of plasma tv`s the they use transistors for colour ......so better call a technician from the related company and do a check up.....no other solutions i hope.....
