Turns on an says no operating system found, got windows operating disk but computer not reconizing the disk
SOURCE: boot up with no operating system
When the system starts, hold the F10 key and go into BIOS and set CD Rom as 1st Boot device (in Boot Order). Because most Compaq's would put the BIOS in a hidden NON-DOS partition on the hard drive, you may have to get an OEM recovery disk for that model. Because there is no BIOS to go to, the machine doesn't know it has a CD, HD or Floppy to go to. A boot floppy/CD is no help. Alternative 1: With another desktop and IDE to Laptop HD connector, FDISK (make active partition and hidden partition [5mb]), Format both, copy the cabs from WinME CD to c:\windows\options. Alternative 2: Find the COMPAQ OEM CD for that model. Since there was no exact model number Click here Please indicate whether this is helpful or not.
SOURCE: windows xp missing file and won't start up
hey i have a similar problem. I was working in safe mode and the computer froze so i shut it down. Now when i start up it comes up with error message
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair
the only problem is that first off i can't find that cd but i have a windows vista dvd , but my computer doesn't have a dvd drive. Is there a way i can install windows vista or fix this problem? this is on a desktop right now and i don't have any important files on it.
p.s. its a Dell 2400 series
thnx

Enter BIOS Menu and look for Hard Disk SATA IDE setting of AHCI. Disable this by setting to Compatible mode.
XP does not support AHCI mode.
Please rate me if this works.

is there a CD in your drive?
Check it.
this is a very common situation.
the BIOS has instructions to check for a system disk at the floppy drive (if appropriate) the CD or DVD drive then the Hard Dirve. If you have a non-system disk inserted, you will get the error "operating system not found"
i hope this helps you
