This worked for me. However I use XP sp3. It's worth a try. Don't install the software from the CD. If you already have, uninstall it. Then try this. I did not use the ethernet cable from the computer to the printer at all. I did this on my laptop downstairs, and the printer is upstairs. So this was done completely wireless. I found this during 2 days of searching, so it's not my fix, but worked for me. It should for you also since the HP software is for both XP and Vista.

To resolve the issue, please follow the steps:
Print a configuration page from the printer control panel by Pressing and holding the Network (check mark) button.
A Page will print.
Check for the printer IP address printed.

Please type this IP in the address bar of a new browser window and click Go button to open the embedded web server of the printer.

After the webpage is opened, please Follow the below steps to install the drivers:

Note: Ensure that the printer driver CD is currently inserted in the CD drive of your computer.

1. Please click Start >>> Control Panel >>> Printers and other Hardware >>> Printers and Faxes ( I assume you have Windows XP).
2. Double click the Add Printer icon.
3. Click on Next> on the Welcome Dialogue.

4. Select Local Printer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer. Click on the Next Button.
5. Click on the Create a new port radio button and select Standard TCP/IP Port from the drop-down menu. Click on Next>.
6. On the Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard, click on Next>.

7. Type IP address in the text box labelled Printer Name or IP Address: It will be duplicated on the Port Name: text box. Click on Next>.
8. Depending on the type of printer you are setting up, you may be asked to select the appropriate Device Type.Select Standard. When you have done this and click on Next>.click Finish.

9. Click Have Disk.
10. The "Install From Disk" dialog box appears. Click Browse.

Note: Ensure that the printer driver CD is currently inserted in the CD drive of your computer.

11. In the Browse dialog box, Browse to the CD sdrive letter in the 'Look In ' drop dowm list.
12. The hpfund09.inf file will be listed. Select it and click Open.
Click OK and click Next.

Select the HP Deskjet 6980 Series printer in the next window and click Next.

It ask for the Printer name (LEAVE IT AS DEFAULT)

13. Click Yes for making the printer default.
14. Click Next
15. The Printer Sharing dialog box will open.
16. Click Next
17. The Print Test Page box appears.
18. Select Yes to print a test page.
19. Print Test Page.
20. Completing the Add Printer Wizard box appears.

21. Click Finish and wait for the files to copy .
22.Click Finish.

Check if it works.

First, make sure that the Kodak printer driver is properly installed in your Sony Vaio. Make sure that you can print while the Kodak is directly connected to Sony Vaio.

If you can print directly connected to it, try to reinstall the GPSU21 Utility.

Good luck!

I want to purchase a laptop printer Canon bjc 80 will it connect to my vaio via the usb or whatever the 15 pin plug is on the left hand side

According to the specs this printer uses IEEE 1284 connection which is infrared. So you would have to have an infrared receiver/transceiver on your laptop or purchase and install one. In other words this printer does not connect directly to your USB port or your Paralell Port.

I am trying to install my printer to my laptop with Windows Vista and the laptop says it is ready. I click print and nothing happens. The software details say that I need to upgrade to Windows 98, NT, or...

I think that the printer driver that you installed in your computer is not a driver for Vista. I checked the supported operating systems and it's compatible with Win 2000 upto Win XP.

BUT, I saw this on a site:

Supported software
Windows Vista HP Deskjet 656c Printer driver utility.

Meaning that there's is a possibility that HP has a Vista driver for your printer. You need to contact HP and ask them where can you get the Vista driver for your printer. I had a feeling that it's the only way that would make the printer work.

Have a great day!

I have a sony vaio VGN-FZ430E for a year now. It is set up on a new printer, a lexmark X4690 wireless. Right now we don't have wireless internet so we have to computer hooked up to a non-wireless network....

If you're on a wired network now and the Printer used to be on a wireless network, your computer may not know where to print to anymore. You might want to try uninstalling the printer in full and then reinstalling it making sure to do it directly connected to the computer you want to print from.
