I purchased this new a long time ago. It has been in storage
for the last few years. I replaced the battery and reprogramed it,
but can't adjust the squelch. I am guesing it is a resistor or diode
sort of repair. I am not sure if it would be safe for me to attempt this
I am trying to determine if it is worth repairing, and where to start.
Thank you for your time.
Re: Unable to adjust squelch on Realistic PRO-2020
It may be that the switch is dusty due to it been left in storage try some WD40 on the back of the switch ..failing that there is a variable resistor inside that looks like a silver halfmoon or horse shoe shape that will alter the squelch but there may be a few so you could really do with curcuit diagram to see which one it is will try to find info for you .....
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

Your PRO-2020, circa 1982, is old and tired, but not quite obsolete. The receiving bandwidth of this oldie is wide enough that you can just ignore the fourth digit. In some cases this may result in interference from an adjacent frequency, but it will usually work just fine. The 2020 is further limited in that it will not receive 800MHz frequencies, and it is not capable of tracking trunking systems or receiving digital transmissions, but what it does, it still does well. The PRO-2020, by the way, was one of the first keyboard-programmable scanners, and the first used in military intelligence surveillance operations.
The memory on the unit is not retaining the frequencies. Check for a small battery on the circuit board like a button battery you would find on your computer motherboard. Replace the battery and reprogram the unit.
I have a Radio Shack Pro 97 Scanner that I received as a present 1-1/2 years ago. It was working just fine and then suddenly there was no squelch or volume. The keys make noise when pushed, but there is no sound for the squelch or volume. The scanner scans the frequencies but does not stop and play. I went on line and found that other people were having the same problems. I went back to the store that the unit was purchased from and received no help what so ever, they said it’ s off warranty and I was out of luck, nice way to do business??. I think that something that cost as much as this should not be junk after a short period of time. I hope you can help me with this problem I do like radio shack, but I can’t afford to buy items that don’t stand up. Sincerely Greg Stevens e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
The "e" represents Error, which means you made an error in your entry. Unfortunately, your scanner may be confused, meaning the computer is "stuck" on lockout and cannot get unstuck. I have the same scanner with the same problem... now. I had it looked at by Uniden's engineers, it cannot be fixed unless you replace the computer. They told me it would be best to buy a whole new scanner, probably a new model. So I did. I'm sorry I couldn't fix it for you. But Uniden said you'd be better off getting a new one. In my opinion, don't get a Uniden, get a Radio Shack/Realistic scanner, they're ten times better and are easy to use. For the best Realistic scanner, get a Realistic PRO-2006. That's the one I have now, it's a gapless frequency scanner which means it can scann everything all the way up to the 1300 MHz band.
i ha ve realistic 2032 which is doing the same thing and was wondering because everything else including all the functions work fine including hearing white noise and being able to control it with the squelch could this be the end for it or is there stuff yet to do
