Question about Acer Aspire 3000 Notebook

1 Answer

I am trying to replace the keyboard on my Acer Aspire 3000 laptop and I can't get the ribbon cable detached from the connector on the motherboard. Either it's stuck or I'm doing it wrong.

Usually the connector either pops up, or there are tabs on the side that slide forward to disengage the cable.

Removing the keyboard broke the plug

Never have seen a Keyboard's Flat Flex Cable, that had a connector on the motherboard end. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flat-Flex-Cable.jpg

The motherboard connector is a type of ZIF connector. Zero Insertion Force. It is composed of TWO pieces, but DOES NOT come completely apart.

The bottom piece is the BODY. The top small piece is the Locking Bar.

IF, the Locking Bar is broken off, you may be looking at MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT.

Acer Aspire 7520G-502G25Mi Keyboard Repair and ReplacementAre you considering laptop keyboard repair? You might think twice if you happen to be the lucky owner of a laptop, because replacing the keyboard rather than repairing it could be a lot less expensive. Laptop keyboard replacement on this particular model is very easy and takes just a few minutes. Here is a quick Acer Aspire 7520G-502G25Mi Keyboard repair tutorial with step-by-step instructions. Once you have purchased the new keyboard, all you need to replace the old with the new is a screwdriver and something plastic, flat and thin like a credit card or guitar pick.
Step one: Remove the two screws from the bottom of the computer that are holding down the Acer Aspire 7520G-502G25Mi Keyboard bezel. The bezel is the bar that sits right above all the function keys.
Step two: Turn the computer over, open the cover and insert the credit card or guitar pick between the bezel and the laptop screen. The bezel has pegs that sit in holes, you need to slowly pry up the bezel. It will make a bit of a popping noise as it is removed.
Step three: Now hold on to the laptop keyboard from the end closest to the screen and gently pull it away from the touch-pad end and flip it over. You will see the ribbon attached to the underside of the Acer Aspire 7520G-502G25Mi Keyboard. There is a little plastic connector holding the ribbon to the computer. To unlock it, carefully pull up on the two tabs; one located on each corner of the connector. Be very gentle when you do this as this is the one part that gets broken the most often when changing a keyboard. The ribbon cable will now be released.
Step four: Carefully pull the ribbon out of the connector and remove it along with the entire Acer laptop keyboard.
Final step: To insert the new Acer Aspire 7520G-502G25Mi Keyboard, place the board face down so you have easy access to the ribbon. Make sure the keyboard is lined up so when you flip it back over the keys are in the correct position. Keep the ribbon straight at all times; twisting it could damage it. Place the ribbon in the connector; it only goes in one way. Once in place, push down on the connector tabs to lock it. Now flip the keyboard over and slide it down toward the touch pad and take the bezel and line the pegs up with the holes and push it in place. Then turn the computer over and replace the two screws you removed from the bottom. You can now power on your computer and see if the Acer Aspire 7520G-502G25Mi Keyboard works. If it is not working, more than likely the ribbon was not inserted properly.

One button is not working

There is not so much that could be done to repair a keyboard. Disassemble the laptop, check the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard. If the ribbon cable is loose, tighten it. If it is tight, replace the keyboard with a new one.

I need to replace the keyboard on an Acer Aspire 3680 series laptop

Hi there.
Remove the laptop battery and the AC power supply, open the lid as far back as you can take it.
Get a small flat headed screwdriver, now, you have to take off the keyboard bezel, this is the strip of plastic above the keyboard with the power button on it, the best way to remove it is to start by the on/off button by gently prying the bezel up from the lid hinge, once you have one side out gently pull it up using your fingers, it will unclip and lift away.
Next you have to remove 2 screws from the top of the keyboard, these should be visible to you, once the screws are out carefully lift the keyboard up, you will see a ribbon cable that is connected to the motherboard, gently pull the tab up on the connector that the ribbon cable sits in and it should release it and you can now remove the keyboard and replace it.
To re-assemble just follow my direction in reverse.
Please post back with the results and for any additional advice if needed.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Fit Keyboard to Acer Aspire 5630 Laptop

When you remove the old keyboard you can place the new one down and the cable should fall in the vicinity of the connector. Most laptop ribbon cables have a little plastic piece that you pull up to make inserting the end of the ribbon cable easier, When you insert the cable sometimes this piece goes down with it other times you have to "snap" it back in place. A word of caution, when pulling up on this piece it should not come off but just come up and a little off to the front or back. I sometimes have to use needle-nose pliers to get it in, but be gentle!

What is your question? Do you want to know how to replace the keyboard or where to find a replacement keyboard?

This disassembly guide might help you out: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/download.php?fileid=16546 but the pictures are pretty small. Essentially you need to remove a few screws from the bottom of the laptop which will let you carefully pry the panel above the keyboard up and off. Then you will see the two screws holding the keyboard in place. After you remove them you will see where the data ribbon from the keyboard connects to the motherboard. This can be removed by carefully popping the small plastic tab up; the ribbon will slide right out. The replacement keyboard can be installed via the same method.

You can find replacement keyboards on ebay: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=aspire+3000+keyboard&category0=
