Fill a cup with vinegar and use a book to prop up the cup so that the steaming element is completely immersed in the vinegar. After about 10-15 minutes, wipe the steam element clean. While you're at it, try running a vinegar/water solution through the espresso machine. If it takes the solution, run plain water through the machine to clear out that nasty vinegar taste.
