Sound like the hhd is going .
backup all your files to some external hhd or to another computer.
use the Window Xp Cd to reformat eh hhd and reinstall Xp. if the format encounter hhd problem it will stop. in that case, you need to buy a new hhd and replace it. if not the format will go throught, do that twice and reinstall XP.

How to fix No Bootable Media Error Message

FAT (File Allocation Table) is one of the most widely used file systems used now-a-days with various versions of Windows operating systems and memory cards. Every logical partition contains a FAT that consists of file allocation information and the information of free allocation units that need to be assigned to files. Although the FAT file system is reliable, corruption still occurs due to various reasons. In such situations of FAT corruption, your system becomes unbootable, resulting into inaccessibility of data saved in FAT based hard drive. To access the data after FAT file system damage, an easy way is to restore the data from an updated backup. But, with inaccessibility of data backup or backup falling short to restore the required data, an ideal option left is to use an advanced FAT Data Recoveryapplication that can recover the lost data.

To illustrate the above scenario, consider a practical case the below error message pops up when you attempt to boot your system:

“No Bootable Media”

As the above error message appears at the time of booting the system, you wont be able to access the data saved in the hard drive.

Cause:

The above error message because the FAT file system has been corrupted. Few main causes for file system damage are improper system shutdown, human errors, and virus attack.

Resolution:

To isolate the above error message and to access the data after the above error message appears, you will need to follow the below steps:

Run CHKDSK utility to repair the FAT file system. If the problem persists, format the hard drive.

While the latter resolution resolves the above error message completely, it also deletes the data saved on your hard drive. In such cases, if the backup is not available, then you can only recover your formatted data by using an advanced third-party FAT Data Recovery software.

A FAT Partition Recovery utility thoroughly scans a FAT based hard drive and recovers almost all data, even after formatting. The data recovery utility can be downloaded from the Internet.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is an efficient FAT Partition Recovery tool that recover lost, deleted, and formatted data from both FAT (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, VFAT) and NTFS (NTFS, and NTFS5 ) based hard drives. The detailed help manual attached with the tool allows even a new user to perform recovery easily without any technical knowledge. It supports Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2003, and 2000.

I am trying to update my back up but I get a message the disc is full (although it does not appear to be when I look at its porperties). I am instructed to delete and backup the files again and when I try...

I thing your file system is FAT32.fat 32 can only store file size of maximum of 4GB.change file system to NTFS.

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
  1. Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, typing convert X: /fs:ntfs would format drive X: with the ntfs format.

File system error: FAT is corrupted

Your hard disk on your media player is corrupted which also does happen on a normal PC/Laptop. To fix it, use windows explorer -> right click on your mouse againt the media player drive -> select properties -> select 'Tools' tab -> select Error checking / Check now -> Tick on 'automatically fix file system errors and recommended also 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' -> Start.
At this point, you may also need to restart your PC/LAPTOP and then be patient as 120GB is a fairly large drive to repair! Once the FAT has been repaired, depending on the corruptions, you may need to replace some songs, video, photos or other files.
ps. the other 'drastic' option is of course to reformat the whole Media driver drive !!!

My dell 8400 displayed this error message 00f0: 136c and 00f0: 0242 What can I do. Thanks

This message is likely to be due to a segment error on your hard drive.

Checking /correcting disk errors
You can use the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard disk Open My Computer and then select the local disk you want to check.
  1. On the File menu, click Properties.
  2. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
  3. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
  • All files must be closed for this process to run. If the volume (drive) is currently in use, a message box will appear prompting you to indicate whether or not you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time you restart your system. Then, the next time you restart your system, disk checking will run. Your volume will not be available to perform other tasks while this process is running.
  • If your volume is formatted as NTFS Windows automatically logs all file transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key information for all files on the NTFS volume.

N-card error

Depending on what type of card you have, you need to go to the appropriate website and download the latest software files. If the card takes a memory card you may also find formatting the card with the fat 32 system more reliable and this may get rid of the Open fat error also.
Hope this helps

Corrupt File System

Well i guess that either your file system is corrupt or your disk is formatted into a filesystem that it's not supported by the backup programs. I don't really know what filesystem is your disk formatted into but usually the FAT32 and FAT16 are the most failsafe file systems for Windows.
So copy/paste the data you don't want to loose and then go to
My computer -> right click on the drive icon -> format and then choose fat 32. Then try backing up your laptop again.
