Question about Instant Cameras

Bell & Howell DR 7o 16mm

I'm in an awkward dilemma with a guy who bought this camera from me. He says its broken due to the fact that the camera is over wound.
Now i know nothing about the mechanics or parts and told him this ;and he said he knows very little about this model.
So i'm on a search for the truth. my question to you How can this be overwound with no film . Is it overwound like old watches ? is there a reasonable DIY fixor does this guy assume its broken and just trying to get his money back? thank you for any knowledge

the solution is great advice. i didn't explain enough though that the camera was shipped and isn't in my posession to take it to a repair shop.
i want to know if its possible to over wind this model and if so what part caused this to happen? does overwinding cause the camera to be unusable?
it was sold without the accessories that the original has. this was the body and the three lenses only which doesn't make sense that it could be wound up without any film inside! if its a spring causing it to lockup, is it possible to be shown what part is causing this?

i need someone who knows this camera modeland its functions to be able to get a solution because i don't have the camera in my possesion to take it for repair
i'm trying to make sure that i didn't sell the camera broken to this guy who says itrs locked up in this state by being overwound..I'd just like to know if that's even possible without having all the parts that make it functional
    thanks

Hi,
I would definately state that you require it back before a refund is given, and that any film inside is not refundable. This is in line with most guarantees.

Whan (and if you get it back) take it to a professional repair shop, as it will most likely need to be taken apart to fix this. Some of these springs can be very large and vicious - so will easily slice bits of finger off or blind you. It is just not worth the risk. If you employ the services of an expert for repair, they will often give a guaantee that it is working. If that is the case - have them seal it, and you can then resell it under a guarantee.
This could be to the original buyer if you wish, but finish the refund first - otherwise it gets sticky with who pays for what etc.

Best of luck with this.

You know what I think,
the camera can be overwound only for two reasons:
there was a film inside.
the buywer put a film inside and now the camera is overwound and he cannot pull out the film without exposing it to light.

In either case, if you sold through Internet you have to ask back the camera to inspect.

On Ebay you can challenge a refund , but it is difficult to prove that the buysr damaged an item, and usually the buyer wins.

Ask the buyer if he inserted a film , and tell him that in that case is his responsibility.
Tell the buyer not to touch the item if he has to send back to you, he can damage it more.
The most likely is that you get the camera back , and you have to take out the film, then you test , and eventually resell the camera to someone with some more brain.

Thank you for requesting me to help with your problem. However, I am not an expert in motion film cameras. I did some research on your problem and found that these cameras have a spring drive, and that they can indeed be overwound.

A responsible seller would determine the condition and state of the item before selling it and do their best to represent it accurately. If the seller made a mistake and sold something that later turned out to be broken, the buyer has a reasonable expectation that the seller will take the item back and refund the buyer's money. So that is what I recommend you do.

Since you know nothing about the mechanics or parts, if you try to service or repair this yourself, you may do more damage than good. I would try to sell it again, fully disclosing that it may have been overwound and is being sold "as is" for parts only. That way someone with more expertise in working with these cameras can make the best use of this camera.

Good luck.

I think the belt is broken on my Bell and Howell 8mm projector (Lumina II TX37). Can you tell me how to open the case to get to the belt?

Remove the screws on the back case don't for get the one where the spare bulb is kept. Also remove the two screws that hold the power cord retainer in place. This will allow you to completely remove the cover from the unit. How ever the tricky part will be replacing the belt because you will have to remove the drive shaft in order to get the new belt over the pulleys. If the belt is not broken and just slipping try cleaning it with alcohol. It worked for me but I found two idler wheels had disintegrated in the clutch assm. Good luck.

I have a bell & howell projector 8mm silent, model No. 1481 serial No. 7186089 and the driving surface of the 3 cones that grip the drive wheel have perished, where can i find replacement drive cones...

I have the same model with the exact same problem. In fact I have 4 of these projectors 2 are the 1481 and the other 2 are 1462. Basically they are the same inside with the 3 cone drive set up. All of theses projector suffer with this sooner or later. I would like to find replacements too. However I can help you with getting drive working and I have repaired my 1481 successfully using converted domestic rubber tap washers drilled out and ground down to the same shape. They take a while to do and you need to make sure that they are not lumpy but smooth. I hope this helps, if you want details let me know, Rob

Bought a Bell & Howell Super 8 projector 481A off EBay and can't figure out how to thread the film.

I found a web (D'Antiques Movie Projectors ) site for an 482a projector which is almost identical to the 481a projector. It had the information I needed.

You also dalled and provided a toll free number at which I may be able to purchase an owners manual.

Thank you
