You very likely have a power supply that has failed.

I can not see my usb maxtor 3200 hard drive in my

this could idicate a low power supply for the device. some computer do have front usb ports, the truth about this front port is that they lack the power to supply some of this devices (being 200GB). If you are connecting it to the front usb then try using the main one behind the pc.
also note that usb polling which acts by reducing power consumed by the device may also be a cause(that is if you are using a modified version of windows other than that from microsoft since the modifier can alter that as well). Also try using it on a friends pc to see the outcome.
do let me know of the out come.
good luck

how old is it?? you really should have the ex-HDD ejected using the "remove usb device" radio button located in the taskbar by the clock. you can corrupt the drive by not removing it correctly. if the HDD makes loud grinding noises.., then it is a head crash which is attached to the armature in the drive.and its no good. but..i could be wrong..i would need to see it firsthand to confirm that it is dead. take it to your local computer shop to have them look at it.
let us know whats going on with it....i hope i have been of assistance

Maxtor 3200

Seagate troubleshooting Error Code 10, states that drive has failed. (Seagate bought out Maxtor)

Before you resign yourself to everything is lost on this harddrive, how about trying one more thing?

How about putting the harddrive inside in a new external enclosure, and see if it works? I suggest that perhaps the external enclosure it's in, is bad.
The harddrive inside is a 3.5 inch harddrive. Same width as used by a desktop computer. It is a Sata harddrive.

Here's an example of a 3.5 inch Sata, external enclosure,

Just pop the external enclosure open that holds it now, take it out, and install it into an external enclosure like the example above. Plug in the USB cable.

Don't know if this applies to your particular Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, but when I went to search for the type of harddrive it uses just now, I ran into thsi, and thought I would pass it along. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/personal_storage/ps3200-sw)

If you did in fact change the partioning structure then the only recourse is to send the drive to a data recovery center. If the drive is running they should be able to recover the data.

Computer suddenly does not recognize my external drive

I assume you have look at the Microsoft Knowledgebase article?

You can also check this troubleshooting article.

You might need to force reinstallation of some devices, the external HDD at least, but maybe also the USB controller device in the Device Manager.

Worst case scenario, open the disk and connect the HDD internally (IDE/SATA depending on the interface).

Maxtor 3200 not working

Check for error code 10 in the Windows device manager. You likely have a power supply problem.

Maxtor 3200 error code 10

I had the same problem and this is what I did.
Problem:
Working for 1.5 years and suddenly quit. Computer did not recognize the hardrive.
Code 10 trying to mount harddrive.
My hard-drive did not make any noise, just a silent click.......click....

Condition:
This worked for me under the situation that:
I used this external drive on my desktop.
I have an available slave connector and power.
I know enough about the inside of my desktop to install a slave drive.

Solution:

Removed the drive from the box, and attach to computer Desktop as slave.

1) There are some slider latches on either lenth wise sides. Once disengaged top should come right off. Or just crack it open.
2) Once opened remove screws from metal Cage, and remove top of cage.
3) Remove three screws holding the USB adapter card. (All visible screws) Not the ones on the actual hard drive.
3) Carefull remove harddrive and the attached usb adapter card in one piece.
4) Remove the USB adapter card from hard drive.
5) Turn off computer to be installed, and unplug. Install drive direct, as slave. No jumpers to move since the drive is already set to slave.
6) Plug computer to test and if it is read and mounted, your ready to go.
7) turn off computer, and unplug. arrange cables in desktop case.
9) Close up the service panel and plug your computer back up.

I need to be sure before sending it in for recovery and spending $800. So I connected as slave to 2nd desktop computer and it mounted. This means that the "USB adapter card" that came with the maxtor3200 was faulty. It was recommended that the best way to back up on another harddrive is to directly plug your harddrive into your computer as slave.

Good Luck!
