Question about Dell 966 All-In-One InkJet Printer

My dell 966 printer is having a problem with an ink cartridge. it seems to be putting out too much ink and gumming up the works. old cartridge, new cartridge...doesnt matter. cleaning, aligning, etc. do nothing to help.

check to make sure the ink holes on the printer aren't clogged than run a printer cartridge report and see what it says sometimes depending what it is it might say on there! hope this helps

Printer says black ink cartrige is low - it is brand new


Sometimes, when you get a new printer, the company only puts a small amount of ink in them, just to get you using it. Then, they want you to buy a full ink cartridge.

The colour ink cartridge is not being identified. I have tried taking them out and putting them in again. I have powered it off and on but nothing is working. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated


Are you using Dell Series 5 ink cartridges?

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 5 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge.

Close the printer. It should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Black cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

If these ink cartridges are new, then take them to the place of purchase for a refund or replacements. If they're old, then try purchasing a new Dell Series 5 ink cartridge.

My dell photo 966 says'left cartridge missing Insert black or photo cartridge'.I've put in a new cartridge but I still get the same message.


the contact that detects the left cartridge may be dirty or not functioning at all. clean it with cotton and 100\% isopropyl alchohol then reinsert the cartridge. if it still doesn't work, it must be replaced.

Dell Photo 966 Ink Cartridge Keeps Gumming up. Cleaning Cartridges doesn't help. Wipe cartridge off and maybe it works for one or two pages before quality goes down. Replaced cartridges but still have same...


Since you already replaced the cartridges there is a problem with the printer.The cartridge must have made the pinter bad.Now you have to take it to the Service Center.

Dell 966 doesn't recorgnise lexmark cartridges


I don't understand the printer message. Even though it may be "compatible" to a Lexmark, you may have to get the Dell cartridge because it will only recognize a Dell branded cartridge. At least try to reinstall the old one and see if you get the same message. If you do, then you may have a printer problem. If not, then the cartridge is the culprit.

It's probably located under the scanning bed.
Look for another section break below the scanning bed.
Lift it up. The print cartridges should be inside.

Replacing an Ink Cartridge
  1. Turn on your printer.

  2. Lift the front cover.

The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.
  1. Press down on the ink cartridge lever to raise the ink cartridge lid.

  2. If you are installing a new ink cartridge, remove the sticker and transparent tape from the back and bottom of the ink cartridge.
