Click "START",
Click "RUN",
Type: services.msc
Hit enter,
The services applet will open.
Scroll down through the services untill you find "DHCP CLIENT".
Right click on "DHCP CLIENT" and then select "START" from the options menu.

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Manage.
  2. In the Computer Management console, double-click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  3. In the rightmost window, right-click DHCP Client and then click Properties.
  4. Change Startup type to Automatic, and then click OK.
  5. Right-click the DHCP Client service again, and then click Start.

Right mouse click "My Computer". click "manage", on the left hand tree click on "services". Now on the right hand pane, find DHCP and double click it. Select automatic in the scroll window. Then on the top left of this pane, click on "Start".

Use static IP addresses. Do not DHCP from the router. Still use the same DNS and gateway. Just specify an IP address for each one, preferably not in the DHCP range used on the router.

Resolving 169.x.x.x IP address problems


This article outlines methods of resolving issues with a 169.x.x.x IP address. This address results from a built in feature of windows called automatic private IP address(APIPA). When your computer is unable to find a DHCP server the APIPA service will assign itself a 169.x.x.x IP address. According to Microsoft, the APIPA service checks for a DHCP server every five minutes.

Releasing the IP address
1. Click on Start and click Run.
2. Inside Run, type ipconfig /release to release the IP address.
3. Then after the IP address is released, type ipconfig /renew

Disabling the Ethernet Adapter
1. Click on Start and right click on My Computer. Then click on Manage.
2. Click on Device Manager and then Network Adapters
3. Under Network Adapters, right click on your Ethernet adapter and select Disable.
4. Wait approximately 5 seconds and right click on it and click Re-enable.
5. This restarts the DHCP client and tries to obtain an IP address from the Network.

Check the Ethernet cable
Sometimes a bad Ethernet cable can cause your system to receive a 169 IP address, try changing out the cable for a new one.
Disable antivirus and firewall applications
Disable/uninstall any external firewall, antivirus, or spyware programs (eg. Norton Internet Security, McAfee Security Center, Trend Micro 2007, Webroot).
Restarting the QoS packet scheduler Protocol
1. Click on Start and click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double click on Network Connections and then Local Area Connection.
3. Click on Properties and uncheck QoS Packet Scheduler.
4. Click Ok and repeat the process.

Restarting the DHCP service
1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type services.msc in Run and click Ok.
3. Find DHCP service and right click on it. Click on Stop.
4. Reboot the computer.
5. When the computer boots up, click Start and select Run
6. Inside Run, type the following: netsh int ip reset log.txt
7. Click Ok.

System Restore
1. Open Start and click on Programs and then Accessories.
2. Then click on System Tools.
3. Click on System Restore and select a restore point when you were not experiencing this problem.
4. Restore your system.

Problem: Network Cable Unplugged

Description: Don’t take this message literally - there are many causes besides not having a cable physically plugged into the network card. The message really means that the network card doesn’t detect a live link to another device on the other end of the cable.

Possible Solutions:
Download and install the latest network card driver program.
Check the cabling - a bad cable will prevent link detection. Substitute a cable that’s known to be good.
Check the link lights on the device on the other end of the cable, whether it’s a hub, switch, router, or a NIC in another computer. It should show a live link to the NIC. If it doesn’t, try a different port.
Auto-detecting speed and duplex mode can be unreliable. Set them manually. Most routers and switches use 100Mb, full duplex. Hubs can only use half duplex.
Problem: Renewing a DHCP lease fails, with error message “An error occurred while renewing interface <name>: The system cannot find the file specified.”

Problem: Network connection configured to obtain an IP address automatically has IP address 0.0.0.0

Solution: Make sure that the DHCP Client service is running:
Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
Double click Services and Applications.
Double click Services.
Double click DHCP Client. If the Service status is Stopped, click Start.
Set the Startup type to Automatic.

Problem: Network Connection Has IP Address 169.254.x.x
Description: The network card is configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and it’s connected to a network with a DHCP server: hardware router, another computer running Internet Connection Sharing, cable modem, DSL modem, etc. But it gets a 169.254.x.x IP address, which indicates that it can’t communicate with the DHCP server:

Possible Solutions:
Connect the computer using a different Ethernet cable or hub/switch/router port.
Download and install the latest firmware for the hardware router.
Disable XP’s Internet Connection Firewall <../xp/ic_firewall.htm> on the local area network connection.
The card is configured to automatically sense network speed and duplex mode, but auto-sensing is failing. Configure the speed and duplex mode manually. For example, most switches and routers use 100 Mb speed and full duplex. To make the settings, right click the network connection and click Properties | Configure | Advanced.
Un-install the network card and move it to a different slot.
If you have a cable modem connection, turn off the computer, turn off the cable modem, and wait a few minutes. Turn on the cable modem, and then turn on the computer.
Problem: Renewing a DHCP lease fails, with error message “An error occurred while renewing interface <name>: The system cannot find the file specified.”

Problem: Network connection configured to obtain an IP address automatically has IP address 0.0.0.0

Solution: Make sure that the DHCP Client service is running:

Error Message: An error has occurred while trying to share <filename>. The Server service is not started. The shared resource was not created at this time.

Solution:
To start the Server service:

Right click My Computer and select Manage.
Double click Services and Applications.
Double click Services.
Scroll down the list of services and double click Server.
Click the Start button.
Set the Startup type to Automatic.
Click Apply and OK.
Problem: Computer A Can Ping Computer B, but not Vice Versa
Solution: This is almost always caused by an improperly configured firewall on Computer A.

Problem: One Computer Can’t Access Some Web Sites, but Other Computers Can

Solution: Look for the Windows Hosts file on the problem computer:
Windows 95/98/Me: C:\Windows\Hosts
Windows 2000: C:\WinNT\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts
Windows XP: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts
Open it with a text editor and you'll probably find lines with the names of the sites that you can't access. Delete those lines, save the file, and try again. If those are the only lines in the file, delete the file. Be sure to save it with a file name of just Hosts, with no file type. If your editor saves it as Hosts.txt, rename it to just Hosts.
The Hosts file can be created by "web accelerator" programs that store name-to-IP address translations. This might speed up access by a tiny amount, but it causes problems when a site's IP address changes.


Problem: A shared disk or folder doesn’t appear in My Network Places

Description: The disk or folder is shared correctly on another computer, but it doesn’t appear.
Solution 1: Click Add a network place and follow the prompts to add it. Browse to it through Entire Network, or specify the path name using the form \\computer\share.
Solution 2: Click View workgroup computers, then click the computer that has the shared disk or folder.

Problem: XP's Network Setup Wizard Says That No Network Card Is Installed

Solution: XP's Network Setup Wizard sometimes fails to recognize an installed and working network card. This is because the NIC's driver program doesn't respond correctly to all of the queries that the Wizard makes when it's looking for a NIC. Configure the card’s TCP/IP properties manually. Here’s how to do it for Windows 95/98/Me <../ics/icsclient.htm>, Windows 2000 <../ics/ics_win2k_client.htm>, and Windows XP <../xp_ics/clientwiz.htm>. Then set the workgroup name to MSHOME.


Problem: Windows XP takes a long time to open a shared disk or folder on a computer running Windows 95, 98, or Me

Description: This is a different problem than My Network Places taking a long time to open <slowbrowse02.htm>. This problem occurs after you double click a shared disk or folder.

Disable searching for scheduled tasks

You can install dns service on your W2003 server :
Go to add/remove program and then go to microsoft programs, you will find the dns service (and others like dhcp service).
You may be prompt for the CD of Win2003

Hi hemgri,

the answer to this problem is unfortunately not that easy, because multiple reasons can cause this error.

It could be a simple DNS or DHCP service error, that can hopefully be fixed by restarting the services
  1. Go to Start>Run and type "services.msc" and click ok
  2. In the list look for "DHCP Client". Right-click and choose Stop
  3. Then right-click "DHCP Client" again and choose Start.
  4. Then look for "DNS Client". Right-click and choose Stop.
  5. Once again right click "DNS Client" and choose Start.
  6. Double-click your Internet Explorer button and all should be working now.
It is also possible that your DNS server is not working properly. What ISP do you have and what are your DNS servers? Try assigning a static DNS server.

  1. Go to Control Panel>Network Connections.
  2. Right-click on Local Area Connections and go to properties
  3. Double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  4. Chose "Use the Following DNS server"
  5. Type in 4.2.2.2 on the first line and 4.2.2.3 on the second line.(These are Verizon's DNS server.) Click OK.
We are just going to use theseDNS to see if there is something wrong with your ISP's DNS. Try browsing and see if it works. If it does, you can also use one of the open DNS servers instead of the one's from your ISP, i.e. OpenDNS's free DNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

If this still doesn't work, then there is a possibility that your computer is infected with a virus. To do something about that would be too much for this forum, because it involves posting of 'HijackThis" logs. Have a look here, someone had the same problem. Try to find help there - the guys are really good and know what they're doing.

Dhcp in server 2003 in domain not working


Windows 2003 server supports DHCP. If you don't see in Administrative tool DHCP maybe the DHCP role is not enabled. You can add this role in "Manage your server". You don't need to reinstall win 2003 server.
Another way to access DHCP management tool is: in command prompt type mmc and then File> "Add remove snap-in" then "Add" and select DHCP.
