You can troubleshoot by opening the tower. Rest one hand on the power supply

to prevent static charge. Remove the system battery (about the size of a nickel).

Reset the CMOS jumper by moving it from pins 1 and 2 to 2 and 3. Reseat the

jumper onto pins 1 and 2 then reinsert the battery.

Check to make sure your IDE cables are pressed firmly at their locations.

Check your memory card(s) also for firm seating. If you have an add-on

graphics card you should also check it.

Power up and look for proper key to press in order to enter setup.

Once in Basic Input Output Settings select Load Setup Defaults.

I cant boot my computer

It is possible that the drive has failed, or the computers power supply has failed, or maybe the memory. Usually when a computer boots, you will hear a beep. if you hear more than the one beep, it will tell you what is causing the problem, let me know how many beeps you hear, if any.

Optiplex 330, fails to POST and locks

When your computer emits beeps when you power on the computer, it's usually means that you have a memory issue. Try re-seating the memory modules and power on the computer. If you have more the one module, insert one at a time and power on the computer.

Dell loud fan noise

Is the computer completing post? This is indicated normally by a single beep after the power button is turned on. On most computers the beep is proceeded by a post screen with the manufactures logo. If the computer is not getting this far, unplug everything but the memory and video. This should cause the computer to give a no hard drive or OS error. If not pull all the memory, this should cause the computer to give a series of beeps (because there is no memory installed). If this does not work either, you could have a bad mother board or power supply.

Hope this helps

I have a Dell Optiplex740 , the power button on the front is flashing , when I press it..It keeps flashing , when I press it and hold it in , it turns off. But never turns my computer on, whats wrong?

I am willing to bet your power supply has failed. There are multiple sections of the power supply and the part that runs your processor has more than likely failed. I have changed out several that have had the same symptom.

The machine dont beep at all when you turn the computer on does it? If it gives you a quick set of beeps it could be your RAM has failed but if no beeps then that is not the case.

Good Luck

Six beeps at post and no joy with boot up

The exact meaning of the beeps for Dell depends on their... rhythm.

Six beeps might indicate a simple CMOS failure caused by a bad battery, which is easy to replace.

Beeping when i turn on and black screen

IT is either one of three things.
  1. keyboard missing; check it's plugged in.
  2. graphics card; check that it has not been dislodged and is seated properly.
  3. memory. Are the memory cards properly seated?

Dell optiplex Gx 150

This is a problem with your memory.

During POST, the computer checks the computer's memory, determines the amount of installed memory, and then writes to and reads from the number of available bytes to ensure proper operation.
Basic Checks:
  • If an insufficient memory message appears, save and close any open files and exit any open application programs not in use.

  • Consider installing additional system memory.

  • Run the System Memory test in the Dell Diagnostics.

  • Reseat the memory modules.

  • Restart the computer.
If the problem still exists after you complete the basic checks, fill out the Diagnostic Checklist as you perform the following steps.
caution.gif CAUTION: Before you perform this procedure, see "Safety Information."
  1. Reboot the computer.
Does the RAM count displayed correctly match the actual amount of memory installed in the computer?
Yes. The computer needed to update the memory count. The problem is resolved.
No. Go to step 2.
  1. Run the System Memory test group in the Dell Diagnostics.
Did any of the diagnostics tests fail?
Yes. Contact Dell for technical assistance.
No. Go to step 3.
  1. Turn off the computer and peripherals, disconnect them from their electrical outlets, wait at least 5 seconds, and then open the computer cover.

  2. Rotate the power supply away from the system board.

  3. Replace the memory module(s).

  4. Close the computer cover, reconnect the computer and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn them on.
Does the RAM count displayed correctly match the actual amount of memory installed in the computer?
Yes. The memory module(s) were defective. The problem is resolved.
No. Contact Dell for technical assistance.

Chuck,
The 6 beeps are an error code. You should note a pattern such as 3 beeps, short pause, 1 beep, short pause, 2 beeps. Also, you may have a set of 4 error indicators on the back of the unit that will show a pattern of green and yellow lights. In any case, you will want to try to run the Dell diagnostics. Let us know the beep pattern and the light pattern and we should be able to give you some more specific information.
