Hi,
You need to get someone who knows about computers to open your computer and check to see what kind of sound card it has. Then type the model number into google, followed by the word driver, and look for a download.
Also download and install Belarc Adviser and run it and find your motherboard model number. Then google that followed by the word drivers, and look for the Chipset Driver (essential) and audio, LAN, and wireless (eg broadcom, atheros, intel pro etc) drivers too.
You could also try going to Control Panel > System > Device Manager and looking in the list for the sound device. It will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Then double click it and then click the driver tab in the window that pops up. See if you can update it from there.

Whenever you wipe a system and do a clean install, this is what you have to do to get the new operating system to 'recognise' what the various parts of the motherboard and sound cards etc. At some point you'll have to find out what kind of graphics card you have too, and download and install drivers for that, they'll probably be ATI or nVidia.
Hope this helps

Chris (ziraffa)

ps Don't let your son at your computer again! :)

No audio ran a check and says the audio is working but I can't get any sound thru the speakers

I don't want to make you feel like I think your stupid but have you checked to see if the speakers are working? It's easy, ust unplug them from the computer and plug them into a MP3 player or anything that uses headphones to make sure the speakers are working, if not figure out the problem with them, batteries, is it plugged into power, is it turned up, etc.
If you know the speakers are working, click on the volume control and check to see if the mute box is checked, if you have a expanded volume control check every channel for the mute check box. if there is no check in the mute check box's make sure all the sliders controls are turned up.
If your still having problems try to reload the drivers for your sound card and see if that fixes it. Finally if you have a extra sound card replace the card and see if the other card works and go from there.
Some worms, malware, and viruses can check the mute boxes, also some programs (IE: games and other programs that uses the sound system) can have automatic settings that can mute the volume and does not un-mute it when you close the program, making the sound un-available for other things until you uncheck the mute boxes.
Check the mute boxes, reload the sound drivers, check the functioning of the speakers.
Good luck!

Dell laptop headphone sound on out headphone no sound

Sound Loss in Dell Computer Headphones b> Most Dell computers have special hardware and software that are set up to automatically adjust the configuration of the headphone ports when headphones are connected, muting the primary speakers in the process. If no sound is coming out of your headphones, this is most likely caused by a configuration issue that can be resolved with a few simple steps.

Basic Headphone Troubleshooting
If no sound is coming from your headphones, confirm that the headphones work properly by using them with a different device. After this, confirm that the headphones are plugged into the proper jack. If your CD/DVD drive has a headphone jack in front, audio will only be played through this jack when you are playing a disc. On a desktop computer, the correct jack to use for headphones is usually color-coded green, while notebook computers will have headphone icons next to the correct jacks. Finally, check the speaker icon in the system tray to make sure that your sound output is not muted. b> Troubleshooting Notebooks b> Most Dell notebooks use a special type of audio jack. The jack, along with the sound drivers that are installed, automatically detect whether headphones or speakers are plugged in and adjust the sound output accordingly. If this does not happen when headphones are plugged in, the sound drivers may be at fault. Visit the Dell support website and download the most recent sound drivers for your notebook. If this does not help, some users have reported success with removing the sound drivers completely and letting Windows install generic drivers automatically. Last Resort b> If all other options have been exhausted, the last resort in troubleshooting a headphone jack is running a complete system recovery operation. This will completely erase all of the information on your primary hard drive partition and reinstall Windows along with the drivers for all of your hardware. This is an extreme measure, as you will lose all of the information that you have stored on the hard drive. However, it will resolve the issue if it is caused by a software problem. If the issue remains, the headphone jack must be replaced. Hope this helps.

Dimension 4700 my headphones work fine but i cant

Are you have the headphones and speakers both pluged in? When you plug in headphones the speakers get muted. You need to change your sound settings back to your sound card if you use usb headphones. The plug on the front of the 4700 also automatically mutes the speakers.

Had to wipe my HD now my speakers arent working

You need to download the sound card drivers for your particular machine. Go to the manufacturers website and look for downloads for your particular model. The drivers are usualy found under the heading of "SUPPORT" Since you did a fresh install of your operating system you will need to re-install all the motherboard drivers for your machine. This would include video, usb,and chipset drivers.

I have a Dell A525 Speaker system that I bought to use with a Dell projector and an Inspiron laptop computer. It worked fine until I had the computer stolen. Not thinking ahead I bought an HP computer...

The speakers can be used with the HP computer. The connection on the speaker set should look like the connector on a headset or headphones for an ipod. The connection for this can be located on the back of the computer near the location of where you plug in your monitor and keyboard. There also may be another location to plug this in at. If you had recently purchased this laptop, many manufacturers will put a connection the the front of the PC. Usually under a flap of some sort.

No sound on HP PC with Vista

Assuming you have reloaded the driver, and have tried another set of speakers or headphones, then the problem must be in the connector on the back of the computer, or the sound card itself. If the computer has a second headphones jack, some have one on the front and one on the back, you can try this. If this does not work either, then the sound card on the computer will likely need to be replaced.

Check the following,
  • Speakers, connecting cables and Sound Card are working fine by connecting to another computer.
  • Speaker Cable is connected to an audio port (Audio/Video port in system box).

  • Audio drivers have installed.
To Check follow the Steps:
• Go to Start>
• Control panel>
• Double click on "System" Icon> (it shows the System Properties Window)
• Select “Hardware” Tab>
• Select “Device Manager” Tab> (it shows the Device Manager Window)
• Select “Sound, video and game controllers”>
• Expand “+” symbol> (check the audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers and others are not in Questioned Mark (?) symbol with yellow color. If there need to install the drivers ).
  • If not, insert the motherboad CD, browse>select audio driver>install. After completion, restart computer and check.

Hi There Try this, CONNECTION Check your connections on Rear part of your PC. Lime is for Sound Out usually a speaker, Pink is for Mic, Blue for Audio Input. VOLUME Try Adjusting the vlume on your PC first. Check the volume on the Headphone too if there is one. CLEANING Using a dump clothe. Wipe the plugs with a twisting motion. WIRELESS\BLUETOOTH Check your battery if it is drained. Try replacing them with a new one or charge them if they are rechargables. If all fails then You may have a Sound Card problem. Using a spare Speaker or Headphone check it if it works. If its not then its Defective and needs replacement. If its working then your Speakers or Headphones are defective. Try fixing them by cleaning or checking the Continuity of its cables using a analog Multi tester. Hope This helps ======================= If you are having trouble with Newly bought items then return them and demand a replacement or a refund!
