I have a HW programmable therm, and I just noticed this morning that the display is all wacky. It is continually flashing form the heat display screen to the something I have never seen before. What does this mean?

The thermostat, depending on the model, normally does not get powered by batteries, they are for backup power. You might be losing 24 volt from the furnace, causing the thermostat to run on batteries.

Hello, first you must verify if you are getting 24 volts to the tstat at the secondary side of the transformer, if not you have a bad transformer. If you are getting 24 volts then check the batteries in the thermostat.

One possibilty is the therm has a antisipator setting, meaning Ex; at 7:00 you want 72*f,but the house is 62*f at 6:15 the therm will bring on the heat early so the house will be at 72*f@7:00.There should be a short lag if it is comming on at 4:00 it is something else.
