There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

320 GB transcend external Hard dics is not at all detected

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the external drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your external drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your external Drive to be detected automatically.

Hope this helps you out.
Goodluck!

Usb port detected but i cannot access the portable hdd because there is no displayed ickon of hdd in the my computer page

Is this on a Windows system?
If so, try right-clicking the My Computer icon, and in the popup menu select Manage. This will bring up computer management, where you can go to disk management. In disk management check if you see the drive, if it has a partition and drive letter.

It is your driver related issue.
Check your operatign ssytem version is winxp sp2 ?
SP2 is perfact for usb 2.0
Also you can try to uninstall all usb driver and install inf update utility it is comes with motherbord disk.
You can uninstall usb drivers from computer with device manager .

Hard drive detection

You should not need a driver for it. Assuming you are using XP or Vista, the disk should be supported directly by the OS.
Have a look at external HDD troubleshooting.
