As a FAT32 drive the transfer capacity is 4gb.. Reformat the drive as a NTFS drive. There is no transfer limit on this format. First check the WD website for a NTFS format utility.. if they dont have it save the install files that come pre-installed on the drive in a folder on your computer, then use the windows utility found when you right click the drive. Once formatted put the instal files back on the external drive and transfer to your hearts content.

Did you install the drivers for the drive? Is it recognised in Windows as a device? If not, try reconnecting and Windows should prompt you to install the drivers, Assuming the drive is recognised by WIndows, then are a few causes for not transferring data. I've attached a link to Western Digital's FAQ regarding Data Transfer problems with your drive....

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=nCt181pj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=1017&p_li=&p_page=1&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=answers.search_nl&p_sort_by=&p_search_text=transferring+data

Several page of possible solutions are listed above.... however, you can refine the search if it is only happening when running specific apps or @ specific times. The answer you seek is located in this link. If you can provide more details on the type of file(s) you are trying to transfer and how, I'll refine the solution for you....

Ac adaptor will not work

Go to any computer-store, and buy a new "empty" external drive enclosure.
Then, "transplant" the disk-drive from your W.D. enclosure into the new enclosure.
All your files will remain accessible, and the new power-supply will power your disk-drive.

I have an i mac and windows 7 laptop.......the laptop is brand new and i want to transfer all my music and movies from my mac......can this be done and if so how???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

> transfer from Mac to PC ... how ?

Several ways:

* use Ethernet cables to connect the network-port on each computer to a "router" (one of those boxes that "splits" your Internet signal, and might provide "wireless" access inside your home), and then enable "file-sharing" on both computers.
Then, the computers can "talk" to each other, via the router.

* write all the files to an external storage device, e.g., USB memory-stick or Western Digital Passport device. Move the device to the other computer, and copy from the device onto the computer.

* "burn" all the files to CD-recordable or DVD-recordable disks.
Move the disks to the new computer.

I am trying to transfer my old computer files to this hard drive which I will then transfer to my new computer. It says there is not enough room.

Make 2 or 3 small transfers as opposed to one big one. The less information that you try to move at once, the less chance of total corruption of all of your files.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.

Not enough free disk space error

I saw that my drive was FAT32 and my machine is NTFS, wasn't sure that could be the issue until you replied advising the 4gb restriction. Does not make sense i transferd 4gb before, but none the less I reformatted the drive to NTFS and my file transfered just fine.
Thank you for your input.
