Question about Datamax I-4208 Thermal Label Printer

Labels stretch when printing from Excel

I print multiple label sizes from excel on Datamax I-class 4208 printers. Sometimes when I swap label sizes the label content is stretched vertical. If I keep swapping printers and label sizes in Excel it eventually seems to clear the issue. It's like the printer retains the height of the previous label size and then tries to applay that to the new label (which is not as high) stretching the content to fit.

This seems to happen with both networked and local printers.

Tried that. It also happens on multiple printers across our factory. It's like when a new paper size is passed to the printer it doesn't pick it up properly so that the data sent to the printer is formated correctly for the label size (print preview in Excel shows the label fine) bu then the printer tries to stretch the data to fit a previous label size.

    Stumpyjon,

I dove into some searches on the net and there is alot of documentation concerning printing labels and the "problems" and/or
difficulty Excel has with this task.

The direction is being pointed toward using Excel as the "data source" and Word for a Mail Merge process.

Because I don't know your exact situation .. I am offering you what I did ..

google the following "excel label printing"

    Hope this helps ..

Hi
First, under File > Page Setup, set margins to the smallest
size that will work for your layout. Change paper size and
orientation if you want. Next, select the Page tab and under the
Scaling category pick Fit to. For instance, if you want to fit
all data columns on one lengthwise page, change orientation to
landscape and choose Fit to 1 page wide by 99 pages tall. This
setting won't stretch pages to 99 pages but will make sure that
a low value won't accidentally shrink the pages to a much
smaller size.

Another option under Scaling is to adjust the size to a
percentage of the normal size.

Important: when Scaling other than 100% is used, manual page
breaks are ignored.

    or

    • Click on File on the menu bar. Click on Page Setup. The Page Setup dialog box will appear.

    • Make sure you are looking at the Page tab.

    • Select Landscape under Orientation.
If this does not fix the problem, then you can automatically shrink your worksheet to one page wide.

    • Click on File>Page Setup again.

    • Make sure you are looking at the Page tab.

    • Under Scaling, see where it says Fit to ??? page(s) wide by ??? tall.

    • Select that option and make it such that it will be one page wide. This will automatically shrink the text so that it appears on one page wide.

    • Seeing that we do not necessarily need the table to fit on one page tall, you can change the number tall to anything obtuse (like 500). Excel will not stretch your document so that it is 500 pages long; but if your worksheet is longer than 500 pages long, then it will shrink the text. We don't really want to shrink the text this way, which is why I suggest entering in a large obtuse number that you will hopefully never approach.
So, next time you are helping a customer who can't seem to get their Excel table on one page width, just show them this handy-dandy trick.

Why datamax M class 4208 only prints on one side of the label?

When printing on less than full width media, the printer has a printhead-leveling cam to adjust the right side of the printhead
for even pressure distribution. To adjust the leveling cam:
1. With media loaded in the printer, print a label (press the
FEED + CANCEL buttons simultaneously) and
examine it..
2. While observing the printed labels, loosen the
Thumbscrew and move it to the left most position. (see
Example 1, below).
3. Next, move the Thumbscrew to the right until the
printed labels contain a complete, even image (see
Example 2). Tighten the Thumbscrew.

Label print too light

This could be caused by the darkness setting coming from the label software / printer driver. It's set too low and that setting will usually override the darkness setting in the printer. That's why test labels are fine.

Hope that helps.

Datamax I-4208 not printing allocated amount of labels

Eventually you HAVE to give the printer a break, during inventory times at work, we have to print 50K+ labels, and in order to prevent either serial number skipping or other issues, I print in 250 batches, yes; there is a time gap but it's better than to restart a series of prints because a few numbers were skipped. Try printing 200 and 200 sets to prevent errors or skips.

Datamax problem

You probably need to adjust the leveling cam if you have not done so already. This is the green thumbscrew near the print mechanism.
