Cannon power shot G9 won't turn on

I recharged the battery-no result. I thought the battery died, so I bought a new one. Charged it fully, no result. Camera is less than a year old!

Same problem. Used the camera the other day, set it down for just a second, and when I picked it back up it wouldn't turn back on. Battery fully charged, and nothing. Not even a year old!! Very, very annoyed!! You would expect more from a $500 camera, AND from Cannon!!

I've a bought camera CANON G9 in NY (03/22/2008). Making a picture, turns off and the objetive is outside. The camera power off, is blocked.
I've bought a new battery but no power on.
I live in Spain. Canon USA does not accept guarantees from Spain and Canon Spain repair costs 175 €.
I think it is a defect in this model camera and "Canon do not assume",
we are quite a few with this problem.

Same problem i thought at first it was because I'd been out taking photos in the snow. friend told me it could be the battery so i bought a new one recharged it and nothing . I'm shocked and disappointed to be honest as it's just over a year old

I was on a night out for my birthday so i had charged my spare battery until it was full power before hand. the battery that was already in the camera, died about an hour into the evening so I got my fully charged battery out to put in it and it then wouldn't turn on! I assumed that the battery I had charged that day was just dead but then my friend who has the same camera put his battery in mine and still wouldn't turn on :( I just got a fish eye lense for my birthday for it and I cant even test it out :(
I have tried poking the switch suggested below but nothing's happening. I'm gutted

I have the same problem, too! The first sign of problem was when I was traveling in Utah last summer. The lens didn't come fully back in when I turned it off, then I couldn't turn it on! How awkward it is having a camera with lens exposed! By taking out the battery and re-insert it a few time it finally worked.

It became worse in winter. My wife took it to Mongolia and France and she couldn't turn it on even once! I have 2 "Made in Japan" Canon batteries and none works.

canon G9 - 10 months old - with fully charged battery will not switch on -- sometimes momentarely switches on then screen switches off with message "replace battery pack" -- sometimes retracts lens sometimes not -- sometimes nothing switches on -- when battery is put in charger the orange light is shown for the battery which was green a few minutes ago when fully charged. It is as if the battery just discharges when camera is switched on. Bought new battery (rather expensive) with same results as above. Also, a green light glows inside "AF assist-beam" window (front of camera) -- never noticed this before? -- pity i loved the camera - will approach Canon agency today for help

I have tried the toothpick in the slot near the SD card. The switch is clicking as I retract the toothpick each time but still no power to the camera on/off or the preview screen. Any other ideas please. I live in Australia with warranty for the dealer in Hawaii so a simple fix is prefered - I live in hope!

If it's under a year, send it in for warranty with proof of purchase. If the warranty has since expired, try this site: www.camerasandparts.com They're amazing for help with these. The no power problem on the G7 and the G9 is most often from a common loose screw that falls out inside the camera and causes a short, resulting in no power on the device. The site I gave you does the internal correction to the screws so you don't have to worry about the problem from keep happening. They're $89 with all of the service for the camera included and the repair and correction and even cover shipping back. The best part, they do amazing work on these Canons, good luck with it.

Well I bit the bullet and went to my Perth camera dealer in town. Was the microswitch all right, but was totally unserviceable. It was activating but no switching of power. Cost was AUD$102 for the repair - all micro solder replacement its back in service again. Just to add a footnote for a second dumb right foot in a pile of stuff in a dark barn (circa 1880) - try not to trip over on a concrete floor - my G9 is costing AUD$264 for a new lens assembly ... ouch!!!

Hi Busymom, if the playback button will not turn the camera on either then its not the on off button. I suggest the microswitch in the base inside the battery/card door. Poke it with a toothpick gently. If the camera now springs back into life, that's the problem. Now you can either live with it or go for an expensive repair! Best wishes, Laurence

Yes it does sound like a battery problem. Keep in mind that the rechargeable battery is only meant to last a couple years maximum, regardless of use. You may consider a low-cost generic alternative just to troubleshoot. Here's one from Amazon with reasonably good ratings.

Kodak Easy Share z712 IS not detecting charged battery

I have the exact same camera almost a year too. It is a total "swinka" on batteries. About 10-15 shots on super ni-cads, and quits without warning.

A pair of Energizer 7X gave me near 500 shots. Much cheaper but still ...

So 4 months ago I bought a charger and 2 rechargeables. Charge one while using the other one.
I may get 70-90 shots per charge on these lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, without flash.

Testing the batteries without a load doesn't really tell you anything.
What's the reading? Should be well over 4 volts when fully charged. Mine show 4.2V

Our cannon powershot g9 camera is 1 year old. It will not turn on

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't power on. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

My Cannon G9 digital camera wont power up even though I have a fully charged battery?

This is usually from a loose screw inside the camera, a screw inside the camera can come loose and cause a short which is very common on the G9. If you go to: www.camerasandparts.com all they deal with is service for the Canon Powershots. They're great if you need a hand with one of these and they automatically do the no power correction on the G7's and the G9's they service which is nice. They are about the least expensive out there at $89 and they include the service and the shipping back. The best part, they do excellent work which is a must for me. Hope that helps you some.

Same thing happened to me when I used alkaline batteries. Have you tried fully charged NiMH? If not you may have a "leak". Your next option is the service center.

Alkaline batteries are a No-No Rechargeable Ni Cads are little better The Best are NiMh Rechargables in the AA cell range or Li-on in the specialist range. Always get for the best.

Canon S2 IS won't turn on with rechargeable batteries??

I would let them charge til you get an indication that they are done. TV remotes require very little power to operate, while digital cameras need a lot, so that's why the batteries would work in the remotes though not fully charged.
